Default smoke

in new to this. is there any way to do a smoke system on a 2 stroke or 4 stroke without using smoke cartridges, or is that only available for gasoline engines?

Absolutely!

The general consensus is that 4 strokes work better than 2 strokes, but some people have had sucess with 2 strokes as well (I'm still trying to find time to try it on a 2 stroke myself).

You can buy a factory built system (Like TME, or Slimline) for around $80. I had an older TME system that I eventually scrapped. Now I use a home-made system consisting of a windshield-washer replacement pump, a servo operated switch, a Check Valve, and a Flow restrictor to regulate the amount of oil being injected into the muffler.

Here's the setup and the results on a YS 91AC engine:
