What retracts should I use for a .40 size airplane? It will be taking off from grass.
And then for another plane with one .25 engine and one .40 engine also taking off from grass what retracts should I use?

I would go with mechanical on a .40 size plane just because of the cost issue. A pneumatic system would be a big percentage of the total cost of the aircraft not to mention the added work involved. Most .40 size planes likely wouldn't have the extra space needed for a pneumatic installation anyway.

I agree that mechanicals would probably be the best way to go. I have a set from Supra that I have been using for many years, but I don't know if they are still in business. B&D and Dave Brown also make good units.
Make sure the mounts are very strong, as grass is hard on retracts! Also, check them after every couple of flights to make sure they haven't bent so much that your wheels get stuck in the up position (been there, done that!).
Good Luck!
