Diesel Conversion

Default Diesel Conversion

I just got stationed in Germany and I went to the local Hobby store and the glow fuel is 13 euro (17 USD) for one liter. I am looking into alternate methods to save on fuel. Has any one had any luck on the diesel head conversion? If so can you run regular diesel in them, because the Diesel Power fuel that our wonderful hobby shops in the states carry they can't get here. I am really interested in going to diesel so any help, tips or warnings will be welcomed.

I had a friend who was in Germany in the military, and he was a big deisel fan. He said he started using them in Germany for the same reason as you, and said that they were very popular there. I have never tried them, but according to this friend of mine, once you get used to starting them, you'll never want to go back to glow.

they stink like all hell, are a ***** to tune, but have gobs of torque and run well once tuned.

Model diesel engines do not run on diesel fuel but a mixture of kerosene, ether and oil. This specialised fuel is often difficult to obtain and usually more expensive that glow fuel. Thus your original need to change is negated.
Re the conversion heads - they allow one to burn the diesel model fuel in a glow engine; but the performance is not as good as an engine designed for that purpose. If you wanty to try diesel then don't waste your money on a head but buy a diesel engine.
