Default Canopy Curled after painting

I painted a Top Flite P51 canopy after I cut it to fit the plane with Lustercoat primer & lustercoat paint, after I painted the canopy, the edges of the canopy curled out. How do I prevent this from happening again? Thank you Allen Josephsen [email protected]

As paints dry they shrink as the solvents evaporate. I can only assume that
is what curled the edges on your canopy. I would suggest painting it after you
glue it on your airplane.

Don't use LustreKote primer on the canopy and use light coats.

Sorry it wasn't the primer. It's just LustreKote in general. I've had it do same thing with a few different colors. If possible, use the lexan paint that's used on RC car bodies. That's lexan/plastic friendly.

I must have gotten lucky, because my Top Flite P-51D canopy was sprayed with LustreKote aluminum and olive drab, and it didn't curl.

If you use very light coats you can probably get away with LustreKote but the thinners in LustreKote aren't really compatible with Lexan. Best to use the paint that is specifically for Lexan (polycarbonate).

The same thing happen to me with my Extra 300. Next time I used the paint the RC car guys use on the Lexan bodies, it worked much better.

Top Flite claims that to get good results using Lustre Kote on a canopy to spray the paint into a cup and let a lot of the thinner evaporate. It can then be painted on with a brush. The thinner in the paint is the culprit, softens the plastic. I belive you can use Perfect Paint right from the can with no adverse affects, and it is available in most all of the colors to match MonoKote.
