Default Granite State iron on gapless hinge

Does anyone know where I can get this stuff? My local hobby shop said it was discontinued. It is an iron on hinge material made of two strips of iron-on nylon fabric sewn together. The seam is placed along the hinge point and ironed onto both sides of the control surface and airframe. It is the best hinging method I have ever used - no cutting slots, fitting hinges, waiting for glue to dry. It does not flutter, rip or come loose and takes less than five minutes to cut and install. It will take paint or Monokote coverings and can be flown immediately after application. Surely somebody out there is making and selling this product. To me it ranks up there with nicads and CA glue as an RC necessity!

The owner of Granite State either died or retired (can't remember which) Don't think anybody picked up the product.

I love those hinges...oh well, maybe someday.

joee65,

I havent used them personally since about 10 years ago or so, but I read another thread here some time ago where someone did confirm they were discontinued. They went on to say that they used an iron on fabric like coverall and just cut strips and sewed them together themselves. No reason that wouldnt work and probably many times cheaper.

One of my club members used to use these as well, what he and I both do now is use worldtex or solartex and make them ourselves. works just as good and are as easy as can be. worldtex comes from horizon, not sure about solartex, but both are avilable

The original hinge was made with plain (unpainted) coverite.

What type of thread are you using, the original looked like monofiliment fishing line.

Just use regular sewing thread and a sewing machine. The great part is that I can make them as big or as small as I like

sorry for to add I have no problems at all with the hinges
I cut the the covering into strips and put the glue sides together and sew down the middle. if the thread ever breaks you still have the covering to act as the hinge

I make my own all the time. I bought a roll of fabric covering and use regular white thread in the wifes sewing machine. You can make the hinge material as wide as you like. I prefer to use two strips each about 1.25 inches wide. If you get ambitious, you can make a batch of these in a couple hours and have them for the next several planes.

This is the only type of hinge I am using any more.

And yes, Granite state went out of business.

Thanks everybody for the info on the gapless hinges! I will buy Coverite and make them myself.

Next question: Does anyone know if Balsacraft kits are still available? Their webpage is kaput and Ripmax makes no mention of the line. I built the FW-190 and wish I would have bought the Hawker Hurricane kit when Tower (the axis of RC evil) still sold it. The Balsacraft 1/7 scale 190 flies much better than the Pica 1/12 scale 190 I built a couple years later.

Hi!

I'm gettting back into RC after going full-scale. The Granite State hinges were the best. I'm wondering if you have come across a replacement that works as well?

Thanks,

Bob

I don't know of anything similar, but it is very easy to make your own hinges. Just take two strips of fabric covering (not film covering) and sew them together on a machine, with the sticky side out. Then just iron them on as you did with the granite state hinges.

Default Granite state seamless hinge

I was able to come across 2 unopened packages of 45inch long Iron-On Gapless Hinge. Unsure of value of each. 1 appears to be all white and the 2nd is blue and white. Can't find these anywhere online when I looked for information on these. Any ideas ?

Thanks.
