Cowl cutting

Default Cowl cutting

I want to install a Saito 91 opposing twin engine into my World Models Midget mustang. I will most likely have to cut the cowl into two pieces. Any tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've done a lot of cowls, but haven't had to split one (yet). Having said that, here are some things you might think about:

(I assume you are going to split it into top and bottom halves, not left and right. A top and bottom split is very common in giant scale aerobats, like the Cardens.)

Suggestions:
Split it at a point where there are the least number of curves, if possible. Will make it easier to match back up.
Cut it using a tool that removes the least amount of matrial possible. A thin hacksaw blade, for example. Using a fat blade or a dremel will remove a lot of material and the edges won't match up as well.
After cutting, glue a full sheet of sandpaper (100 grit or so) to a flat surface and sand the two mating surfaces flat. Remove as little material as possible.
You'll need to build some sort of lip on one half to line up and put bolts thru to hold it back together. Maybe glass in some 1/16 ply?
I would suggest a cowl ring to keep the prop opening squared up.

Poke aroud a bit on the web and you will probably find some pics of a Carden or two with the cowls opened up. Might give you some ideas.
