Can gyros be used to stabilize aircraft?
Hi,
This is completely unrelated to anything that I am doing now, but I had the thought of using solid state gyros to mainting pitch or roll in R/C aircraft. Has anyone done this, and if so, are there any sites/products/books that you can refer me to? IMO, this would aid newbies like myself in learning R/C flight while taking away some of the risk.
I am referring to the helicopter gyros, btw. I think...
Thanks in advance! [8D]

Futaba sell airplane gyros. Be aware that they do not maintain roll or pitch attitude they just damp the disturbances.
Heli gyros can be used also but do not use the heading hold mode. You will not like it!

How does one go about connecting these to the radio system?

FMA makes a "co-pilot" that does what you describe. The reports on it are pretty good. I have no personal experience with it, but, have seen it work. It seems to do what is claimed.

The FMA Co-pilot works quite well. Several are in use in my club.. they work so well some beginners are reluctant to turn them off at all, and actually learn how to fly!
I use mine for holding wings and altitude level when shooting aerial photos..

So one only needs this, right?

"needs only this.."
Probably...
Note the Co-pilot will recover from "unusual attitudes" very nicely... but this means rolling can result in low-alitude pull-thrus -towards- the ground when the plane is inverted..
For active manuvering, it's best to turn off the stabilization feature, and engage when normal flight is desired.
I recommend any FMA product without reservation...

Note... some of the autopilots use a detection system that can't tell upright from inverted. That could make things "interresting" because theya re cvery good at keeping the palne level, inverted which gives a very rapid descent to a trainer. (nos is not up... the flat bottom wing "lifts" down... you have it comming down almost as if it were a powered, guided rock and gravity was doubled)
