AM radio usage in the US? how illegal is it?
I was wondering what the repercussions of using an AM radio transmitter device in the US might be? does anyone know what the dangers of using one are? I know they are outlawed and that's all I know. thanks!

RE: AM radio usage in the US? how illegal is it?
NEW AM radios are still sold in the US with current FCC type certification. Hitech makes 2 and 3 channel AM radios. Futaba makes several 2 to 4 channel AM radios. There are others. All of these are on the 72 mhz aircraft band or the RC car band (75 mhz? Whatever... I don't do cars.)
The FCC wouldn't still be issuing new type certificates for new models of AM radios if they were illegal.

It is not the AM that is illegal. Wide band AM & FM are illegal as well as 75 mhz for aircraft or 72mhz for land based vehicles. 27mhz is legal for both land or air. Ham frequencies are legal only for those the maintain the ham licence.
Use the frequencies for what they are licenced for and you won't break any laws.
I love the question "How illegal is it?" Its like "How pregnant is she?"

hi
I really don't think they are illegal in US. I am currently using a futaba conquest AM on channel 16. So long as they are available on the newer channels I believe they are OK.

I'm sorry. it was indeed "Wideband" that has been phased out and made illegal.

since my old transmitter is AM pre-1993 and lacking a gold sticker [hence illegal], and the new transmitter I purchased is FM I must have made the connection that AM is prohibited. my mistake.
