West System Epoxy over Polyester
I am rebuilding a set of Goldberg floats. These floats had 1 coat of polyester resin applied previously. Can I put a coat of West System epoxy over this?

For the most part, epoxy and polyester are not compatible. I say, "for the most part" because I have heard that there are some epoxies that will work, but I have never tried to verify this. I did lay a patch of epoxy on a polyester fuse once. After it was dry I wanted to see if it actually bonded. I tried peeling up the edge with a razor blade and the whole thing popped right off. You are better off using polyester on polyester parts and epoxy on epoxy parts.

Generally epoxy will go over polyester BUT not the other way around. Make sure you sand the polyester to get off all the wax before putting on the epoxy.
If it were me though I would stay with the polyester.

Ah, the smell... I find that most people don't like the smell of poly. I think it smells good actually. It reminds me of the surfboard shops and conjures up images of glassy 6-8 ft surf. It's all in your perception I suppose.
