Zenoah G38 - Suitable plane
I have a new G38 on the shelf and am looking for a project that will suit it.
This engine was bought for a 1/3 Sig Spacewalker that I had ordered back in October last year but cancelled in April when I found that Sig was still out of stock on them.
I am interested in scale or sport scale planes that suit. I have been looking at the Dynaflite Super Decathlon but it looks like too much work to modify it to scale. Lanier tell me that this motor is too heavy for their Taylorcraft.
This probably leaves me at another attempt to get the 1/3 Spacewalker. (I'm not big on Warbirds)
Any suggestions for another plane?
Ari

Well, if you are willing to do a Sig kit you are not afraid to build! IKON has a number of models that may suit your needs. I like the Stinson, Fairchild and the Monocoupe. Funny, I have had all three! http://www.ikonnwst.com/

Tom,
No, I enjoy building. At the moment, I'm building a 33% Super Decathlon from Hostetler plans.
What have your observations been on the Ikon kits? I have seen some very mixed feedback on them
Regards
Ari

RE: Zenoah G38 - Suitable plane
I've got the Ikon Monocoupe with a G-38. It is a pretty complicated project to do well, and needs a few mods. On the other hand, it sure does fly well, and looks great. The G-38 is perfect for it if you use a fabric finish. The kit uses older design techniques, and requires some thought in places. Some folks confuse this with poor quality. It was the standard for kits thirty years ago. Emil is not a young man. He retired from Boeing BEFORE he started IKON, if memory serves me correctly. Emil's strength is designing a good-looking, less common subject that flies well. Where you take that design is up to the builder. I'd build another of his kits, if I really had the hots for the design.

Ari,
Thanks!
Yes,it's from an IKON kit, but it's powered by a Saito 300. Way overpowered! A G38 would do just fine.
The Stinson weighs close to 20 pounds.
The Fairchild had a G38, which was plenty. It weighed 19 pounds.
My Monocoupe has a G38. It has not flown, yet. A friend had one, with the same motor, and it flew extremely well.
Thanks!

Sell it on E-Bay. I have had one, and thay are over weight, underpowered, hard to start junk. Grabbed an OS 55cc gasoline engine and I have never been happier.

Way to bring a 6 1/2 year old thread back to life!! LOL
G-38 is not a bad engine, not overly light, but not bad. If you had problems with it being under powered and hard to start, you had it tuned wrong with the wrong prop.

I put a DLE 30 on the Hangar 9 150 sized Thunderbolt......flies nice and I get alot of comments on the airplane both in flight and on the ground.....I's no speed demon, but it's no snail either......I bet a 38 would be quick......plenty of room for a bigger prop.....there are plenty of "Jugs" around I think Robart has 3 bubble tops out...

Over weight, yes if you compare it to the engines we have these days like the DLE. Underpowered? Hard to start? Junk? Sounds like someone requires a few lessons in tuning engines. I have never met a Zenoah I didn't like. You can find a lot of good info in the gas engine forum on the Zinoah engines that will be of help. I once got a ton of feed back when I was having problems with a G-62.
Scotter, what happened to the 30 mph I saw on the news last night? I just got the emails this morning {late} that the guys were going out flying this morning. LB is looking pretty good from what I have been hearing. Bigger wind advertised for tomorrow?? I just love the evening news!!

The place is great, it's the people that make it suckie. If it was a club field it would be OK with a limit of the number of planes in the air and a flight stand rule. Ever notice there are only a couple of planes in the air at one time out at the lake bed. No rules, just common sense people. Wind hit here hard about 10 last night and the news said it was going to be with us today so I slept in again. My bad, not enough wind here this morning to even call it a breeze!! I will be out during the week. News says another big warm up again!!!
