Default D A N G E R - Scam - W A R N I N G

I have a Spirit 100 for sale less than $200. Here is a copy of the e-mail I got, from a person who wants to buy the plane, and he (or she) will offer me 1200% more than I'm asking. I can't find out where on this site to warn other members, but here is a verbatum copy of the e-mail.

I'm a registered user, "Blue Ribbon" - I've deleted part of my e-mail address, incase this jerk is following it on this site. My e-mail is "[email protected]"

Hello ,

Thanks for your quick response. I am interested and
would be willing to buy it at that price and as i said
earlier that I do have an International shipping
agent that will come pick the plane up from your house
and ship to me.

I will arrange for payment by sending your full name
and address to my client in the States who is owing me
the amount of $2650 to issue you a cashier's check for
this amount. which is a refund for a cancelled order I
placed with him, and being a refund the amount can
only be written on a single check. I know it is more
than the plane's price but after getting the check, I
need you to cash it and deduct cost of the plane,
then do me a favour of wiring the remaining balance to
my International shipper via money gram/western union.
You will also deduct $100 for running around and for
wiring the difference. After this is done, he will
then pick the plane up from your residence and ship to
me.

So, confirm this and send your full name and address
including phone # for mailing the check payment to you as soon as
possible.

Waiting for your urgent reply,
Kind regards,

Good Morning:

Here is a copy of the ad. Where do you live? How can your agent do the packaging - or do they just cover the actual shipping cost. If you have more questions, please let me know.

It's for real!! You lose the plane and all the money from the BOGUS AND BAD Cashiers Check!

That's very real to your bank acount (now minus the $2650). Run away from that as fast as possible.

The plane is never picked up. All he wants is the money you wire to him.

I saw a check for $46,000 to a fellow for his Cessna 150 that he was selling for $29,000. Same deal. The cashiers check looked very real.

For as long as this scam has been running it has been continuously discussed on the internet, in newspapers and on natiional and local news programs. BBB's have warned about it as have other consumer groups and even the FBI.

That being said, it continues to totally AMAZE me that people still get sucked in and fall for it.

The scams change all the time and old ones show up with new twists. Just remember the old saying "If its too good to be true, then it probably is." Better to loose a sale that sounds fishy than put yourself at risk.

I agree that greed plays a part in some scams, but I wouldn't be so quick to blame the victims of this "overpay with a cashier's check" scam. I think a lot of decent folks get sucked into it because they are basically trusting people. Where, in the past, folks could easily go a life-time without running into a scam artist, today they're besieged by them. Folks are going to need to learn Internet "street sense" if they are going to do business safely on the Internet.

I tend to agree about the trusting part. However, there is a big difference in a $20 over pay on a $1000 purchase and a $17000 over pay on a $29000 purchase.
