Default Battery winter or long term storage

I was wondering about how to store all of my batteries during the winter or long periods of down time.

Of course I have them in doors during the cold months, but should they be fully charged or drained completlely.

Just wondering

Thanks

Mike

Default Battery winter or long term storage

Mike:

Thirty years ago, the common practice was to drain and store in
the crisper tray in the fridge. Today has switched to fully charge
then to the fridge. Each spring, I cycle each pack and replace any
pack that is going on its third year. With 17 packs, I have to use a
magic marker to keep track on each pack as to its age. A note
pad lets me track the condition of a pack to see if a bad cell is
present as I record the discharge/charge times for each pack.
On the older packs, I'll keep the good cells and make a new 4 or
5 cell pack.

Put the battery in a zip-lock bag and place it in the fridge.
It should keep that way for years.

OK, I gotta ask...how does lowering the temperature ~30 degrees (compared to room temperature) help a battery pack? It might reduce the internal resistance a bit and the resulting self-discharge rate, but you're still going to have to charge it in the spring anyway. And not to state the obvious, but the garage where my planes live is already pretty chilly in the winter anyway...

This smacks of urban legend or perhaps a holdover from older battery technologies or am I just missing something?

Red has a pretty good answer to that question:
