Default painting foamies

Having just purchased a GWS Formosa, I thought I would jazz it up a bit with some color other than the supplied decals. I painted several coats of water based polyeurethane to seal (or so I thought) the foam. I then sprayed on an oil base rattle can enamel. In many places the foam was eaten away as if swiss cheese. Question: Is there a type of paint in a rattle can that is water based and and I emphasize AND, will not peal up when covered with easy release masking tape to cover over a previous color so I can have multiple colors to the fuse and wing? Any help would be appreciated. Tim in Tacoma.
