Default prop balancing- heavy edge?

In the July 2002 issue of Model Airplane News there's a prop
balancing article by David Gierke. Here is a quote:
"...place the prop on the balancer exactly in the vertical position,
with the heavy blade at the bottom. If it rotates to a new equilibrium point, it has a heavy edge."
Mr. Gierke goes on to explain how to shave off material to balance the prop but I found no further explanation that made
clear to me just what exactly is meant by a heavy edge.
Could someone please expound?
Thanks a bunch,
Pete

Default prop balancing- heavy edge?

Short version.

All props have *4* edges; two leading, two trailing.

Place the prop in question on your balancer. Hold the prop horizontal with edges 1 & 2 at the bottom, then let it fall. Note which edge falls and how far it drops.

Next rotate the prop 180 degrees so that edges 3 & 4 are at the bottom, then let it fall. Note which edge falls first and how far it drops.

Whichever edge falls the farthest is the heaviest; start sanding here.

BTW in the description above when you hold the prop horizontal then let it fall you are measuring the *bottom* edge, not the top one.
