ULTRACOTE PEARL COLORS???
Thinking of recovering a plane with some of the PEARL colors from ULTRACOTE.
Was wondering how hard it was to match the paint with the pearl colors.
Have been told that the matching PEARL PAINTS are so-so.
Any colors better than others.
Thanks

Roger,
I used all pearl colors on my Somethin Extra. I can attest to the fact that matching the colors was pretty difficult. I was gong to match the pearl green that you see in the picture and use it on the wheelpants. Well after checking all the hobby shops, and car parts stores, I came up empty. So, I just painted the pants gloss black with the white stripes. Yeah, I probably could have had it custom mixed at an auto paint store, but really didn't want to spend the bucks. I can, however, attest to the great look you get from the pearl colors, especially in the sunlight.

I used pearl white on my first SE. Same scheme as hooked, except True Red instead of the pearl green. I had the paint matched at an auto body/paint shop.
I was less than impressed with the pearl white; it basically looks silver in sunlight, and I could have saved some bucks for the same appearance by using silver UltraCote and rattle can paint on the wheel pants.
YMMV...

Did it cost much to have it mix and matched at a car/autobody place?

Yes. Don't remember exactly how much now, but I do recall that my wallet tried to crawl up somewhere dark when the guy handed me the bill...
Plus more to have it put in a rattle can, if you don't have any spray equipment. But then you have to use it within a day or so, since it is catalyzed paint.
I used my airbrush. Lots of effort for a lousy pair of wheel pants. Since I quit building helicopters (and the need to paint their canopies), I've been using rattle can paint for my sport airplanes. Much less bother and hassle, with acceptable results. Sure, nothing beats a sprayed and clear-coated auto lacquer finish. But its just not worth the considerable effort for a sport airplane, IMO.

I just covered my newest Bipe with the pearl yellow and Pearl Red. I needed to match the red for the cowl and the yellow for the wheel pants. I got close with the yellow but never even got in the same area code with the red. The pearl went on just as nice as there other products but out in the sun you have to be right up on the plane to see it is something different. It just wasn't worth the extra trouble. JMO

Thanks to all that replied.
With all that was said here and talking to others I have decided to stay away from the PEARL colors.
Great place to find out info.
Thanks again.

Roger, befor you leave. I did my GP Aeromaster in a red white blue theme all in ultra coat pearl. Yes at first I had problems finding paint that would match, then in desparation, I found out that even plastic parts can be coverd in wonderful low temp ultra coat. No need for matching paint.!

I don't know how you are planning on painting, but if you are planning on automotive type paint, then Cycle Color (on the web) has a special offer on hand matching (the computer can't read pearls well). Free with some minimum purchase. Don't know how much you need or what their special is. Normally a hand match is $100.00, and $20.00 by computer. I don't know if they would be willing to match covering samples, they are motorcycle specialists, but they are also color experts and a solid business.

Yep, Kept the Iron on lowest temp that would work and stretch the ultracoat, and just applied it normally. I still have the plastic wheel plants somewhere, Will try to post a pic later.

RE: ULTRACOTE PEARL COLORS???
Faye Stiley devotes a whole section to covering wheel pants in his first covering book. After the success I had with ironing Ultracote on the compound wing tips on my T2, I'll be covering the pants on my SSE when I get there. Just go slow, heating and stretching.
