Default Ultracote or Fabric?? ARGH!

My CG Super Chipmunk is sanded down to 400 grit, smooth as a baby's butt and begging for a sweet covering job. I have my trim scheme all designed, now I can't decide if I should cover it with Ultracote, which is what I have covered all my previous planes in, or venture out into the world of fabric covering. I plan to put a YS 91 on the front of it, so I will be using 20% nitro fuel. My trim scheme only has 2 colors in it, yellow and black. If I go with fabric I could just cover the whole thing in yellow and then paint the black on, place the decals and then seal it. I already have a roll of yellow ultracote and a roll of black which I bought at the LHS, they carry Coverite and Supercoverite, I could take the two rolls back and get fabric...which should I choose? Which will look better and last longer? Help!!

I agree with the above, use the Ultracote.

If you want to go with fabric, I suggest using SolarTex. It is substantially lighter than Coverite fabric, and while just as strong, the overlap seams are less noticeable. Another plus to the SolarTex is that you do not need BalsaRite or StixIt to insure the covering will adhere properly - the adhesive is excellent. SolarTex come plain or pre-painted with a fuel proof paint.

The only suggestion I will make about SolarTex is to use a thin clear coat to seal the weave. The weave is more open than Coverite, thus the dirt gets in easier and makes it harder to clean without a clear coat.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, the Chipmunk is a metal skinned plane with fabric covered control surfaces.

Wouldn't it make sense to duplicate that? Use the fabric only on the control surfaces?

Koverall is a good covering, however, you must apply an adhesive to the airframe in order to apply the covering. It is heat shrinkable.

With Koverall, you will need to fill the weave and then prime and paint. Some of the better finishes I have seen have been done with Koverall and a dope finish (I know, "old style" painting)
