magnum for 4*60
Hi!
I noticed that a Magnum XL-91RFS costs 50 dollars less than a O.S. FS-91 II Surpass at TowerHobbies.....While browsing through thousands of forums, I not once read about anybody using a Magnum... I do know that an O.S. is good
Is Magnum engine a good engine for my Four Star 60?

I completely disagree with the comment that magnum is the bottom of the line. I own both the O.S. and magnum 4 cycle and fail to find any relative difference between the two- other than the extra cost of a pretty polish on the O.S.
Although I have had such a good experience with magnum, if it's power your looking for, go with saito. It is a much lighter and more powerful powerplant. The only thing better would be Y.S.
Since it's the 4 star, the magnum would be purrrfect, in my humble opinion.

Different experiences....
I've used the Magnum .91, the O.S. .90, and the Saito
.80. For week in, week out....Good idle, good transition,
less fussy, fuel economy, power, and just plain runs
good...guess what ? The $150. Magnum comes out on
top....go figure....
The worst one....the Saito .80. What a dog ! Crummy
idle, would back-fire and die alot coming off idle, died
in flight about a hundred times, and puked oil out of
every seam...was the sloppiest engine I've ever seen.
Granted, it was an early one, and I've heard that they
had higher compression, which made for all the bad
habits. One time I lost the header and muffler off the
Saito, and had to buy a replacement. $ 80. BUCKS !!!
Magnum .90 header and muffler come as a set $29.95.
Can you guess which one I'm running now, and which
one is a paper-weight ??? Some guys like the Saito's,
but mine was a disappointment, to say the least. :stupid:

My Magnum .80 RFS completely smoked my Saito .72 as far as power. Both transitioned great and never once had a flame out. I love Magnum engines and I'm speaking from experience. I've owned just about every size.

I am pleasantly surprised to here the way magnum is performing for you. I have been in the hobby for 10 years now, and I can say that magnum has done nothing but continue to get better. Global has got some people there that know what they're doing.
I do have to say, I like the sound of the saito better, however, you can't go wrong with a magnum. Plus they don't stick it to your pocket book.

magnum for 4*60
I'm flying a 4*60 with a Saito .91 in it. My flying buddy has been flying one for a year with the Magnum .91 in his. He flew mine the other day & said the Saito will out pull the Magnum.
I know the Saito in mine is more than enough engine.
I went to the LHS to buy the Magnum because of the price, but the Saito looked sooo gooood...............

Being frugal have its rewards, but it does require a bit more work. Just be sure to take your time to break it in properly on the bench, with low nitro (5% or 10% good, 15% okay) and plenty of oil (20%, preferably with plenty of castor).
By going with a Magnum, one thing you don't pay for is instant gratification (i.e. an engine that runs perfect right out the box). As long as you understand and are okay with that, Magnum 4strokes are good reliable engines and terrific bargains. I am happy with every one I own.

engine reliability
I agree all engines benefit from a proper break in, however, the magnums can too be flown "right out of the box." I have never seen one that will not work! And I'm at a high altitude>5,280ft plus. That goes for both 2 and 4 cycles.
Point the airplane up to see if it leans out, and check that the throttle transition is smooth, if all is good, fly it, you won't be dissapointed. If not, adjust it, I've never had one fail me yet.
Just realize the possibilty of a dead stick because the engine isn't broken in yet.
The magnum is on top with the best of them with regards to power and reliability. :boxing:
