How are piston-driven engines started when used in ducted-fan jets? thx Jim

Same way a prop engine is. With a cup on the starter pressed over something a spinner on the fan. The difference is you need a shaft to bolt onto the starter shaft to extend its reach.

not all fans are started this way my jhh couger actually uses a belt around the starter and fan spinner just like starting a boat.byron fans have a wand extension that fits on the starter then through the exhust tube to the spinner on the fan.my midwest jetster just used a reular starter on the fan spinner easist to start of all ducted fans.

There are 3 main ways:

For small engines, pull start (like a car)

Belt Driven Start, its just a belt between the
engine and starter (Like Thorjet Fans)

And Prode, this is the easiest method, its just a
probe that connected to the saft of the fan
while the other side is solts into the start.
