I have been called a cheapo but if that was offered to a student of mine I would check that the engine turns over, the radio & servos actually work ( batteries excluded ) and that there is no structual damage to the aircraft. Then I would offer around $150 - $200. If any of the 3 main citeria ( engine, radio, airframe ) didn't work out then all bets are off.

I just went back and looked at the engine ( OS I believe ) and it appears to have the needle valve broken off and a chip out of the carb. If your just starting out do yourself a favour and buy some decent gear.

I think DonM is being generous in his valuation. I generally do not recommend buying a used trainer unless you know the history and usage of it. Not just knowing the seller. Trainers tend to lead a rough life, as this one surely appears. I suggest keep looking. Checking that "everything works" is meaningful only if the buyer has a sound understanding of what that means. It needs to work 'right". This looks like a project for an experienced buyer to rehab, and not for a person new to the hobby. There are too many things that can be messed up that are not immediately apparent.

If I were a dealer, I suppose I could put a price on just about anything, but I'm not. I'm a hobbyist, and in my view, this is not worth owning. Buy something that hasn't been so beat to death.

Don't ask the guy if the stuff works - make him prove it.
Start the engine and see how it runs.
Have him bring it to the field so someone there can check it out.
If he doesn't want to then be very apprehensive.
If you are just a beginner you probably don't know what to look for.
I've been at it for 5 years now and still would want a second set of eyes I trust when looking at used gear.
Good Luck,

That there is the Hobbico Flightstar. I got one for my Father in Law a couple of years ago. It needed over 8 ounces of lead to balance. Yes, 8 ounces on a 40 size trainer.

If that set up were offered to me, I wouldn't give more than $100 for it. Knowing what the Flightstar is like, I would keep looking.

I'm a beginner but I've done a lot of looking and looking at this it's evident that this plane has been put through the wringer. I think everyone is being over generous with pricing.
If #1, does it run (the engine)
#2 with the abuse, are the servos striped?
#3 does the radio gear work?
If it were me and all the ifs were good then $50-75 because the structure has seen its use(and they probably got there moneys worth already) and should ether b thrown away or totally gone through.
just my $0.02
Shawn
