BEST PLACE FOR FLYING RETIRING SOON
I guess this is more like a poll. I'm going to retire in the next 10 years or so and Im looking to buy property so its paid for before I retire. So my question is..... Where do you guys think is the best place to retire. I would like to fly year round or close to it. I currently live in central Florida and we can fly year round here, however this is NOT where I want to retire. So, what do you flyers think.

North Carolina..........
Middle part of the state is pleasant. Toward the mountains is pleasant and beautiful. We have not too hot summers and winters aren't often so bad you can't get out to fly every week or so. No salt on the roads in the winter, usually, so your plane hauler isn't going to rust away on you anytime soon.
Our winds aren't a problem most of the time. You fly year round with ease.
However, if you're into RC gliders, it's not the greatest state. Most fields from the mountains in the west down to where the sand starts are not overly large and almost none are flat. Thermal soaring isn't very big here. No room really. And not too many slopes. At least ones that aren't tree covered. And no real wind to drive 'em anyway.

Has anyone ever lived in the community called "OTOW" - On Top of the World. They used to advertise in some RC magazines. I think they were in central florida - perhaps Ocala. I was always intrigued by the concept of a planned community that included an RC field.

I've thought about the Huntsville Ala. area a number of times. Spent some time around there and it's not bad. I wouldn't want in the city but out in that area. We traveled all over the States in a 5th wheel for 13 years and that was as good as any. DON'T ask why or how I ended up in Fla., I don't want to know. ENJOY !!! RED

I'm in the same boat, although I'm quite a bit nearer to retirement... 327 days.
The bad news is I gotta wait for the wife to get her time in; so, another 3-4 years at least.
I too live in the sub-tropics (south Louisiana). The miserable climate is bad enough, but I suspect you have no desire to stay where you are for the same reasons I am getting the hell out of here... and we'll leave the rest unsaid.
Anyway, we're looking at the Las Vegas area. We want LOW humidity and few bugs. That eliminates the eastern side of the country. I was thinking about the southwest, but have no desire to live in northern Mexico.
When you sit down and really look at the situation, it all boils down to a Hobson's choice... IOW, there is no Utopia. Each geographic area of the US has good points and bad (except Oklahoma,. Massachusetts, and New Jersey; they're all bad...) Vegas has a healthy r/c community, and that's one of the main requirements.
I thought about the land-owner gig, but in the end decided that a nice house in a subdivision makes the most sense. I'm getting too old to look after acreage.
We'll be making several reconnaissance trips as her time to retire draws near. Good luck with your search.

I fully understand about leaving Louisiana,, at least you didn't have Katrina as we did. I too am retired and looking to move and haven't found a place yet, but we just finished rebuilding. Besides La climate doesn't have the tornados that Ok does. Jim

Granted im not even close to retirement. I am thinking of accepting this new job in FL. But what about those hurricanes. Thats the only thing im debating about.
Is that one of the reasons for getting out of FL. fireplug?
My parents just retired in Tennessee and they told me there is a flying field just near their house..

RCFURY:
HURRICANES,,,HURRICANES,,,, HURRICANES,,,, Thats what I hear all the time. I lived here since 1980 and I went thru only one that done any damage to my house, It was Charlie. I lost lots of trees and 3 shingle tabs. However I spent several weeks on overtime at the fire department putting up the blue tarps. The thing about hurricanes is that even if its a cat 5 it has to be a direct hit. when you get about 100 miles from the eye the winds drop off to tropical force winds. So hurricanes is the last thing i worry about. The thing about florida at least where I live (central Florida) is the dirtbags, homeless, urban dwellers, or the residentialy challanged. Central Florida is the *****HOLE of the world. I hate it here. So im looking to buy property so its paid for when I retire. I liked the Arizona area near the south rim of the canyon. Im not to keen on snow. So I'm looking for people who fly all year round and like where they live.
