Default Want to paint a ice chest..... grin.......

Some years ago, Carl Goldberg had a contract to supply the Army with RC target drones. The models were of the Mig-27. They had a K&B 61 engine and were made of the stuff that cheap beach beer coolers are made of. There was no covering, no protection at all for the foam. The idea was that the airframe wouldn't last past the first flight or two. Matter of fact, the surfaces were hinged with duct tape, gray duct tape. Primitive? You betcha!

But now I got three of these suckers. They come 3 to a box with one engine. But I plan for my beer cooler airframe to last for awhile. I plan to spray paint the foam and wonder if anyone has any experience doing that?

Anybody know a good paint that'd be fuelproof and wouldn't hurt the foam?

I figure to paint at least one of them BUDWEISER red. Saw a cooler that color last time I was at the beach and it looks good on foam.

I have not done this but I am going to venture a guess here. If I were going to do it, I would use Krylon H20. I would try it on a test piece first then the real thing. Also, a some of the polyurethanes would probably work.

While I don't have an answer for you, I know it can be done. [link=http://www.sureflite.com/products.php?mc=Airplanes&sc=%20%20SureFlite%20Warbirds&dtl=SFP-40&offset=0&pid=SFP-40&Swm=0]Sureflite[/link] planes have been doing it for years. My brother flew a few of these in the late 80's. And while they weren't the best flyers in the world (heavy), they did have a fuel proof finish applied right to the foam.

Perhaps a latex paint? Search for latex paint and threads by an RCU member named 'Campy'. I have read more than a few instances of guys using latex paint for a fuel proof finish after letting it cure for a couple of weeks.

You can also use a low-heat covering like Ultracote
