RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
A Canadian version of the Darwin award, eh?
Let me see if I can picture this correctly - Engine out, plane gliding toward the pilot, who is controlling it with the Tx. The pilot goes to catch the plane, forgetting that the plane is under his/her control so when he/she starts getting close to the plane the left hand is reaching for the plane while the right thumb is flying the plane. And the wingspan - even 1/2 the wingspan - is greater than the armspan of the pilot.
Please provide videos of the first attempt in case there isn't a second.

RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
curious why you would do this....
if it is for fun...then I agree with the others... not a wise idea....
if you feel that you need to (why? I have no idea) since your plane doesn't have landing gear.... then just belly land it on to the grass.... cut power and slide it in....
a 7lb object travelling at 15 or 20 mph can do quite a bit of damage....
Heck.. I helped a new guy get a plane out of a tree... he climbed and shook it out... I was dumb enough to catch it.. my arm was sore for 2 days....
Please do not try what you are thinking

RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
I agree wit the rest of the comments - THIS IS A STUPID IDEA!!
What are you trying to do prove? That your Health Insurance works or your MAAC insurance?
Trust me on this one, the OHIP with cover you first and then after the investigation your MAAC membership will be pulled. [:'(]
If you want to catch a large object with limited flight caracteristics - go to the gym and toss a medicine ball around!

Once, while attempting to catch a 2 meter glider, I missed grabbing the fuselage. The wing L.E. hit me right across the brow. It missed my eye by an inch.
My eye swelled shut for a week. It left a nasty bruise that stayed with me for months. I feel lucky that I didn't lose my eye sight.
I was only 13 years old at the time. Young and DUMB![sm=pirate.gif]
The glider that injured me was a Craft-Air Piece O' Cake. It only weight 2.5 Lbs and was traveling at about 10 MPH or less.
With a fourty size plane, you could be killed or seriously injured!
When I catch an electric plane, it is either out of a hover or can be stalled and drop gently into my hand.
I would not attempt to catch a 5 Lb. plane traveling at 20+ MPH! YOU WILL BREAK SOMETHING! Hopefully not your body......
If you do attempt it, PLEASE PLEASE video tape the attempt. After you recover from the injuries, You could probably win money on one of those stupid home video shows![sm=biggrin.gif]

RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
This has to be a troll! Just had a friend struck by a 17 oz foamie on the back of the calf and the result was a stay in the hospital. Ask an engineer to compute the force involved with a 6 lb trainer at 25 to 35 mph and you will change your mind about attempting this. A few years ago a fellow in the midwest tried to teach himself to fly, lost orientation and hit himself in the chest, he died.

RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
Its not as bad as it sounds. I have landed my plane almost vertical going against the wind, dead stick, stalling it just when it is about to touch the ground. I would say that on landings I can get the speed as low as 2-5 mph. I will do the same thing when i catch the plane and I will take a video of the first attempt.
Jon.
PS. think of it as a 7.5 pound foot ball.

RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
Many years ago we flew on a hilltop in a farmer's field. I was flying an ElectraLite, an 8 foot glider powered by a TeeDee .049 and was just a little too high to land at the crest, which meant a long chase down a steep hill. My dad thought he could run under it and catch it out of the air. He did, but grabbed it behind the wing, which made the nose drop and he speared it into the ground at a dead run.
At least he didn't trample the wing

RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
Reminds me of a video I just saw. A guy had a huge bottle rocket. Instead of using a bottle to hold it for launch, he held the launch stick with his butt cheeks. I don't think he will be sitting anytime soon.
Another vid showed two guys jumping off a house roof. They landed in a sitting position on a folding table. The table instantly crushed. The way they were rollin around in pain, I bet they suffered a few compression fractures of the vertibrae.
One more, someone on a motocross bike catching big air off a jump to make a perfect landing into the back of a parked box van. Perfect landing meaning not hitting anything except the front of the box. ouch!
Make a video of your catch, MikeB

Even better than a video, how about letting everyone know when you are going to do this so that anyone in the immediate area can watch and video it for the rest of us, eh?

RE: catching a .40 sized trainer
I am going to do it, im only flying once a week. The last time I went flying the wind was going south, so with the runway going west to east the wind was going the rong way to slow the plane down. Im only going to do it when i think its right. And a nother thing, I am not going to do it on a club field.................. somthing tells me that wouldn't go over to well[>:].

He's going to do it away from all others/alone so that he can make the claim that he did it successully. With others there to video it he wouldn't be able to do this.
