Default Mufflers For Smoke Systems

Hey Guys,

I'm building a 1\4 scale, powered by a Moki 2.1 and wanted to know if the bisson muffler can be used for the smoke system? It does not mention it, but it does have the pressure port. I am using crankcase pressure for the fuel tank, so I was thinking I could use the pressure port on the exhuast for the smoke system?

Any and all input greatly appreciated ................ Thanks, Greg

I think it depends on how far the pressure nipple is from the engines exhaust port. The smoke stuff needs pleanty of time to get hot. If the nipple is to far from the exhaust port the Smoke oil wont get hot enough.

I read that some people are taking their stock mufflers and drilling a small hole up close to the exhaust port. Then they use ethier JB weld or brazing to attach a small brass tube to the hole. They pump the smoke oil through this hole... Sorry I couldnt find the article...It was lost long ago in forum oblivion.

Thanks for the comeback,

I figured it needed to be pretty close to the exhaust port to ensure a good full flash point of the oil. I will look at the online pics of the bisson again and do some head scratchin

Any other input greatly appreciated, come on you smokers, whats the beef?

Thanks, Greg

just a quick reply to the first post by Greg. If i understand you correctly you have thought of using a pressure port on the muffler. the problem with using the exhaust pressure to pump smoke oil back into the exhaust is that the pressure differential is zero. As you can imagine this means nothing will happen and that is why most smoke systems have some kind of external pressure system. as everyone has already pointed out the port should be as close to the exhaust manifold as is practicaly possible.

"The pressure differential will be zero"

I am planning on using the Sonic Tronics smoke pump, I have no idea what psi rating it has for pumping the smoke oil, but know everyone uses one brand or another to acheive their smoke. Am I asking this question in the wrong forum? No smokers here?

Any and all appreciated ...................Greg

There's no reason why you can't use that muffler, but you shouldn't use the regular pressure fitting, you're better off tapping a new one (It's easy to do)

Here Greg, read this. It will explain where the smoke tap should be and why.
