Default Engine Mount Modification ? Opinions

Hey Everybody,

I have an aluminum engine mount thats a bit too narrow between the rails for the engine. It's a 40 size mount and I'm wanting to use an old K&B .61 engine. I'm considering sawing the mount in half down the vertical center line, then mounting it as two seperate pieces to get the correct rail spacing. Has anyone ever done this? Would I be better of just springing for a new .60 size mount? The engine will be mounted on a .40 size stick type plane.

All opinions welcome and appreciated.

You could probably get away with it. It's not the best way to go, but it should work.

I'd do it and not worry about it.

For the $5 bucks it costs for a Hayes mount, I'd save the aluminum mount for another project. A lot of work to save $5 bucks....

If the side rails are long enough, split it, bolt it up to the engine rails, and do the locating work on the firewall. Just make sure that both mount rails have the engine mounting holes in the same relative locations. That's the most difficult part of using a split mount.
