Default help with hot wire saw please, proper output voltage?

several people responded to an earlier post with saw plans, thanks very much.

following a suggestion I got a model train transformer off Ebay. It looked like the right thing at the time, but now I am uncertain based on the specs. hoping someone can confirm that this will or won't work.

it is a Railline 300.
specs are:
input 120 volt AC
output 17.5 V DC, 18.5 V AC
total output 5.5 VA

The plans suggested in the range of 5-6 V, so I thought I had it right.

Can anyone help? thanks a lot!

If the output is constant voltage. [ I use a 12v car battery charger charging a battery as my supply] just vary the length of the cutting wire until it cuts at the right rate. I slid a croc clip along the extra wire until I got the right rate cut it off and wound it round a ST screw.

Crude but it works fine for me.

Same here. I use only a car battery charger. No buttons or knobs just plug it and cut cores.
