Default Where to find 1/6 Scale F4U Decals?

It would be really neat if I could buy a full set of decals for a particular scale of plane. For example, I'm trying to find decals, placards, etc for the 1/6 scale F4U-1A Corsair that I am building. I'm looking for the Jolly Rogers scheme decals, nose art, etc. but would also like the "No Push", "No Step", etc lettering. It would also be cool if I could find any cockpit placards like the ones that show which way to move the handle to spread the wings, etc.

I have read where some will print theirs on decal paper but where to you find the original stencils? Where would I find the dimensions of the originals so I can scale them down? I know there are plastic modeler sites where I could buy the Jolly Roger squadron scheme in 1/32, 1/48, or 1/72 scale but it would a great find to locate 1/6 decals.

Am I just dreaming or is there such a place?

There are several places which will make these decals (dry transfers actually) for you, in any scale, but it isn't cheap. The two that come to mind are Pro-Mark and Aeroloft Designs.

Thanks for the info. I have found a couple too but they want me to send them what I want and they will scale them for me. I can do that myself. I have pictures of cockpits but nothing that has the clarity of the placards that I would want to copy. I was hoping someplace already had them. I'll have to keep looking.

Thanks again!

Hi.
Printing your own decals you will quickly run into problems.

-inkjet-printed decals need to be clearcoated before and after applying. More work, plus twice the paint will give you twice the yellowing-effect over time.
-decals are not opaque, background will shine through in most cases
-you cannot print in white (e.g. skull and crossbones)

I have done this inkjet-thing, but quickly gave up because results were more like amateur decals than professional markings.
Decals need to be made on thermal transfer solid ink machines in order to get satisfactory results. These need only a clearcote after being applied and are totally opaque. Plus they can print in white also.

As to the "scaling". I usually work with 1/32 scale decals for plastic models and scale them up. HOWEVER just increasing the size does not hack it. The images need to be vectorized by hand, meaning A LOT of work. I'm in the process of doing a small "how to" over in the jet section, the thread is titled something about a tiger meet F-18....feel free to have a look.
After this is done, these decals can be printed in any scale on the special machine. Result is a decal that is very similar to the ones in plastic revell kits.

Concerning the F-4U in 1/6: my old man is currently putting together a 1/6 F4U and will be dressing it up in the Ira Kepford "29" markings. Decal files are growing slowly at the moment.....if you have plastic model decals and/or pictures showing the difference in these markings, then i can offer to print up a set for you in solid ink.
Best regards
Hank

Thanks for the reply Hank. The scheme I am going to use is also VF-17 but not in Ira's number 29, but probably as #3 - Lt. (jg) F. James "Big Jim" Streig. I've attached a picture of several of their 1As.

I'd appreciate any files you have to offer. If you are interested I have several close-up pictures and videos of Corsairs I have had the privilege of sitting in. One of them is the recently restored FG-1D Corsair by [link=http://bentwings.com/fg1d/fg1d.htm]Vintage Aircraft[/link] restored in Ira's markings.

Hi.
Ill be home this weekend and will dig out what i have already.
We have 4 or 5 books, including the flight manual, plus a whole pile of pictures from the Corsair in the Navy Pensacola museum.

All these photos (also those on your link) are a great help, however the stenciling is really difficult to take ff of those. I'll be looking for a good 1/32 scale set of decals on the VF-17 suadron aircraft....

Best regards
Hank

Great thanks. I have the Erection and Maintenance manual but have not gone through it looking for markings. I'll check that this weekend and see what I can come up with.
I've seen some good websites with VF-17 stencils so you should not have any problems there...

OK, i've gone through what i have, and what i've found out: every plane was painted differently, and also the finish on the very same airplane changed over time. Basically it's impossible to duplicate 1 aircraft at 1 time without a single high quality source.....

I'll look into VF-17 stencils and see if i can come up with a 1/32 set to take as a "master documentation".

Best regards
Hank

OK i need some help on this :-)

Image linked from bentwings.com. Please confirm "LT. JG. KEPFORD" and "K.I. MOORE" (?!?!) on the side of the aircraft. Also, is the bright spot on the cockpit frame worn paint or does it also say something?

Did the original carry any of this stenciling according to your documentation, or were they added for maintenance reasons just like the shiny finish (original was satin to matte)?

Thanks
Hank

I believe the names are correct, and I think the bright spot on the cockpit frame is writing - it looks to square on the ends to be worn paint and I don't know how the paint would be worn like that.

As for the stencils, I have not seen any close-ups of WWII Corsairs in their stock colors so I don't know the answer to that but I will search more.
