What part of florida are you going to? When I was there in flight school, I went to a great shop in Orlando. It was owned by I think Bob Fierenza. I may be off on the last name. He was big into jets then and in the magazines all the time. Has been about 10 years but I bet he is still there. Seems he was the dealer for yellow aircraft back then. They flew in Deland at the airport. Get there when they are flying if you get a chance. It is cool.

In Orlando area, you have, in order of size:
Graves Hobbies
Bob's Hobbies
Flightline Hobbies
Graves is far and away the most interesting place, especially for a one-time visit. In addition to a large stock of kits, parts, etc., the ceiling is packed with maybe a hundred or so aircraft for sale, new & used. Have fun.

Hi Guys,
I will be on vacation for two weeks in Florida and we generally travel over most of the state, so please keep the suggestions coming for places to visit.
Many thanks,

Sarah - you might want to contact Dave Platt in Plantation, Florida. I don't know if he has a walk-in shop, but he does market several kits and accessories. If he does have a shop, I'd guess it would be full of scale goodies.
I think Orlando is the hobby shop capital of Florida though. I don't know what's in South florida, but most of the shops I know of in north Florida are small hole-in-the-wall type shops. They have just what you need to keep you in the air and that's about it.

Sara, if Orlando is on your agenda you will have to visit Bob's Hobby Center, it is now owned and run by a very famous (to British Modelers) Steve Thomas who has put on many world famous exhibitions throughout the world. He would be most interested in talking to a Britisher since he has spent a lifetime over there. Also, Graves is a must just for the experience of seeing literally hundreds of model planes and other craft hanging from the ceilings.

Model/Hobby shops in Florida
Hi Guys,
I have had a look at the web sites for:
raves Hobbies
Bob's Hobbies
Flightline Hobbies
Bob's Hobby Center
and I have their addresses and telephone numbers and I will pay them all a visit early on in my vacation. That way if they haven't got the things I want then they should be able to order them before I have to go home (which will be hard to go from the 22 degrees C to the freezing in Bristol, England)
I look forward to the Florida sunshine and going to Jonny Rocket's dinner!

If you have the time, you might also want to check out Skycraft Surplus:
http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/
They're not RC, but they have TONS of neat stuff. If that sounds vague, it's not intentional- they have so much stuff, I couldn't tell you everything. However, if you like electronics, connectors, cable, hardware, etc., etc., you don't want to miss this place.
Check out the website for address, but if you're visiting Graves Hobbies, you're only a few miles from Skycraft.

Sarah,
If you are in Orlando, see if the Flying Tiger restaurant is still open on the airport. From what I remember, you enter via a road between 2 strip mall buildings like you are going in a back entrance to the airfield. When you see the WW2 vintage vehicles and guardhouse, you know you are at the restaurant. This is off of route 50, the main east-west road thru Orlando. Anyway, you can eat by a huge picture window looking out on the runways which are very close. Each table has speakers that give you the tower frequency chatter. The food and bar area are both excellent. Flying Tigers isn't the official name, it is something like Volunteer Group/Squardron something-something, but everyone knows them by the Flying Tigers name. The restaurant is built to look like a Flying Tigers building in China during the war. They have real photos from the war and lots of vintage aircraft parts on the walls, ceilings, etc. You can have drinks on the patio which lets you be close to airport traffic and the ramp for the fly-in planes. A lot of pilots fly in to eat dinner. The whole place is a special experience. I have eaten at one in Buffalo, NY too, but the Orlando one is much nicer.
