Spruce vs. Basswood?

Default Spruce vs. Basswood?

Hello everyone!

Plans call for main spars Spruce 1/4"x1/2" i have any at this moment, can i use 1/4"x1/2" basswood instead? Is Basswood equal for strength as Spruce are?

Ghostrider FIN,

I'm not an expert on hardness of wood but they are about the exact same in strength and I've used basswood where it calls for spruce many time with no ill effects. I would use it if it were me. I've been building for many years and substitute wood all the time.

Basswood is the better choice. It's harder, tighter grained and has more spine than spruce.
