Default Drilling and Painting Carbon Fiber Landing Gear

Howdy,

I just got a carbon fiber main gear for my WM 3D FunFly 1.20 and since this is my first C/F gear I have some quesitons. First -- I was wondering if special tools were needed to drill the holes... Second -- I want to paint the gear white to better match the model and was wondering if there was any special prep needed..

TIA for your help.

On the CF gear you can use any drill bit that will work on wood. I stagger my drilling so that no two holes are on the same line in the gear. Just a slight stagger is all I do.

As far as paint, I have never tried that. On the Ultimate that I am building now I am going to try Ultracote to cover the gear with. What I will do is glue a leading edge balsa strip direct to the gear. This will get sanded to shape. The TE will get the same treatment. Then I will just cover and shrink the Ultracote.

I have used this method with wire gear and it has worked fine.

Carbon fiber is real hard on cutting tools, but is even harder on your body. Splinters and airborne fibers DO NOT seek a way to exit your body.

Consider the waste product as a Hazardous waste!
