Default Paint Question

Can I use Tom's procedure to prep the model and then paint with Klasskote or do I need to stick with the latex?

The answer to your two part question is "Yes" then "No"

A properly applied and finished glass base is an excellent surface for any type of primer and subsequent paint finish.

Thank you Ed. This will be my first time doing it right (painting) as opposed to using covering so I just want to get it straight. I understand that latex paint is heavier than epoxy. Is this true?

Jim,

I cannot answer which is heavier. I have just started to experiment with latex paint. I painted some test pieces before I started on an airplane. Bare latex is not glow fuelproof. I then applied a waterbased polyurethane over the paint. that was not glow fuel proof either. The fuel stripped them both right off.

The blue airplane in the picture is an epoxy glass base, epoxy primer and then the automotive basecoat/clear coat process.

The wheel pants are epoxy glass with epoxy primer. The paint on them is ordinary latex and then automotive clear coat. Automotive clearcoat is fuel proof.

From the discussions I have seen Klasscoat is fuelproof.

Generally, a latex finish is lighter.

Once again, Go by your automotive paint supply house (one that carried DuPont finishes) They have a clear coat in an aerosol, that is intended for finishing door jambs. It works great for our purposes. You need to let it cure for a few weeks before exposing it to glow fuel. It will resist up to 15% fuel if you clean the surface within a few hours (a few being 4 or so). I said fuel resistant, not fuel proof.

By Automotive paint supply house, I don't mean your friendly local Auto Zone. Go to a real paint supply company. Every city of any size has at least one of them.

The clearcoat I use is a two part system, clear and hardener, therefore not available in rattle cans. It is completely fuel proof up to 65% nitro that I know of.
