RE: smoke trail makers
Smoke systems typically rely on getting 'smoke oil' into your muffler. The heat of the muffler / exhaust turns the oil into the smoke.
(There are other bits & such, but we'll keep it somewhat simple now..)
So, you'll need a tank for your smoke oil, and a method of delivering it into your muffler.
Oh, did I mention you typiclaly neeed a 4 stroke engine, as the engine burns hotter. 2 strokes just dont get hot enough to 'smoke' teh oil.
You typcailly don't see a smoke system on 40 sized planes, due to the space & weigh limitations, but it has been done.
For small planes, What I've seen:
A small tank, 4-6 oz, a servo to turn on & off the oil flow, and an extra pressure nipple on your muffler, to pressurise the oil tank to get your oil flow. And a regulator, to vary the flow. And, of course, tubing..
Mount the tank. Connect the tank to the muffler, for both the pressure & the feed. Mount the servo. The servo arm crimps (crushes, folds, binds, etc..) the tubing, acting like a valve.
Perry sels a 'smoke pump', but is somewhat cumbersome to fit into a tiny fuse. So I've been told.. A few others too, I beleive make a 'smoke' pump.. Plugs into your receiver. Does away with the need to pressureize your tank, and removes the need for the servo.
Slimline & Pitts make smoke capable mufflers, with nipples & coils built in. But dunno how small they go.
Then, there are the 'smoke bombs', that are lit with an electric match. But, they are a one shot deal,a nd have no 'off'.
Personally, I don't like the idea of somethign burning on or near my plane, except fuel!
Now, this is just from what Ive read & talked about. I'm no expert..

RE: smoke trail makers
First, let me disagree politely that 4S is hotter than 2S, it is the other way
arround if you compare them at the same amount of Nitro in the Glow
fuel. The hottest is Gasoline, but that is not what this engine is.
The Simplest system and lightest for this size engine I have seen
but I did not experiement yet with is from Macs and avaialble
via Tower hobbies, but NOTE - you have to be carefful with the
places of the niples otherwise won't work, i.e. you need Macs
idea about the muffler. The system is very cheap:

RE: smoke trail makers
I tried the macs system per the instructions and got very little smoke. Then I moved the pressure supply for the smoke tank from the muffler to the engine backplate which I drilled and tapped and it works unbelievably well. Mine is on a 120 ax 2 stroke and I did wrap the stingers on my pitts muffler with 1/8" copper tubing to preheat the smoke fluid. I am using a mixture of 50% baby oil and 50% lamp oil. Smells good too.
I'm just not sure how well it will work on a 40 size engine.

Is that right[&:] i always thought it was the other way around EXCEPT for tune pipes on 2 strokes those ***** things get HOT. On that note has anyone put a smoke system on a full length tune pipe before?

RE: smoke trail makers
Here is some good help. The needle valve to adjust the smoke into the header makes a big difference.
