Hanger 9 J3 cub 40 size
Doz any one know if a super tiger 61 will fit in the Hanger 9 40 size J3 cub, I have one and I think it would be a good engine for that cub. But it is a bit big,I just wont need all the left thumb.

Seems to me that fitting in the ST's huge muffler would be the problem. If you got a pitt's muffler it might work but then you might have engine reliability problems. I dono' about this!!![X(]

I have the 40 size with a .46 engine in it. Will it fit a .61? - yes. Is it practical - No.
Think about the airplane - it's a Cub, and not meant for speed, or performance, or acrobatics. It's a slow flying plane, and if you put a .61 in it (2 -stroke) you're probably going to over power the Cub, and eventually it's going to fall apart.
Were it me - I'd take a trip to towerhobbies.com and buy a $60 .40-.46 sized engine. It's perfect for the plane, you know it will fit, and you don't have to worry about over powering the cub.

Hello,
I was reading the other posts and I was in this similar situation a while ago. A .46 is good for this airplane, a .61 would leave you cutting you cowling up pretty bad. Also, the added weight of the engine, although it doesn't seem that much, would mess up flight characteristics. The first would be that you would have to add lead to the tail to counter the new engine weight. By the time you add all the weight you will have a lot higher wing loading on your airplane which means it will have to have more speed to land and take off. This is why I didn't do it.

I have had several 40 size, j3 cubs and have always used the Saito .50 4c in them, great combo. I just bought a Hanger 9 J3 cub from a LHS , used with radio , plane and a Saito .56 in it. I plan to go ahead finish the plane and install the Saito .56 and fly it. If you have the bucks go with the 4 cycle, they sound great.

Get a 55AX and swing a big, low pitched prop; you'll get scale speed, great toque, and the best reliability on the planet, for the same weight as a 46. You can get the 55AX at tower for 3 payments of $48.33, and yes, they ship it with the first payment. I just bought one
I think the BEST engine for that plane would be the O.S. 56FS-a, but I think it's $250 (still can do 3 payments though).
