Default EXPLANATION OF RC AIRCRAFT.

RIGHT ME AND MY FUTURE WIFE ARE HAVING A SLIGHT ARGUMENT OVER THIS HOBBY,
FIRST OF ALL CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO HER THE REASON THIS HOBBY IS SO EXPENSIVE
SECONDLY SHE DOSNT RELISE THE WORK AND EFFORT AND CRAFTMAN SHIP THAT GOES INTO THE HOBBY
THIRDLY WHAT MAKES THIS HOBBY STAND OUT FROM THE REST OF THE HOBBIES
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE GOOD POINTS TO THE HOBBY COMPARED TO OTHERS.

SOMEONE AT LEAST CONVINCE HER ITS A GREAT HOBBY

Well mate, you've reached the point that we all get to. It's either her or the planes.

Let me offer you a simple solution:
Is she a looker?

Base your decision on that answer.

You'll just have to come out of the closet! It isn't as bad at it seems.
She'll warm to it, then she'll just support it, then she'll be angry and crying over it. Then it'll fly out of the other ear!
Remember all women, regardless of beauty... are basically mad. You'll find this out as you get older.
Just accept her ramblings, smile, agree and then... just do what you originally intended.
What ever way you go, it'll never be PMS safe, so why give it a seconds thought?

Go to the hobby shop young man and buy something of the top self that raise the blood pressure.
Then just leave it laying around the house for her to find.
It's painfull... but there's no other way.

my girfriend says its a dam good job you live in another country lol.
another bonus is my daughter goes mental for me to put videos of planes on youtube and shes only 2and a half and she loves watching them.
The most expensive part is i am starting from scratch hae everything to buy again. the only thing i have left from last time i flew is a box of offcuts from projects and an electric starter for the plane. oh not to mention a few plastic and metal clevises and control horns. i got a long way to go yet and a few good old ear bashings from the girlfriend.

come to think about marrige when they say till death do us part were actualy setting a target

To parody the famous Brad Paisley song "Im Going to Miss Her":

“Well I love her, but I love to fly R/C
I spend all day out at the flying field and hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door and said I had to choose
If I flew R/C today
She'd be packing all her things, and she would be gone by noon

Well I'm going to miss her, when I get home
Right now I'm at the flying field and I'm flying in the sun
I'm sure it will hit me when I walk through that door tonite
Yeah! I'm going to miss her
Oh looky there a perfect loop
Alright!

There is a chance if I hurry I can beg her to stay
But the weather is right and the flying is perfect
No telling how well I may fly today

So I'm going to miss her when I get home
Right now I'm at the flying field and I'm flying in the sun
I'm sure it will hit me when I walk through that door tonite
Yeah! I'm going to miss her
Oh looky there a perfect loop
Yeah I'm going to miss her
Oh looky there a beautifil landing"

Like the Brad Pasley Song "I'm Gonna Miss Her" this also applies to about any hobby we have. I will share this with you. I started my oldest son into R/C flying when he was about 15. Today he holds a degree in Aerospace Engineering and he is an F-16 Fighter Pilot in the USAF. Both my sons fly R/C planes and are in the U.S. Military. Now, I don't know why this shouldn't inspire her to let you have a plane or two. One of my other hobbies is collecting and restoring real military vehicles. I proudly own a 1943 M3A1 Scout Car and a 1942 Willys Jeep. Both my sons have them spoken for upon my passing, (way down the road I hope). I have also owned my share of muscle cars. Both of my sons each own 1968 Camaros. This should be enough to show her that this is a great hobby that only leads to better venues down the road. What does my wife think? She has always supported me in whatever venture I have chosen. She has also been impressed with the amount of prophet I have made off a few of these venues. She always knows where to look for me if I'm not in the model room, in the garage or in the driveway. I'm either at the Hobby Shop, at the flying field, at the auto parts store, or at a military event. These are all positive things that make a difference. One may ask, "What difference can building an R/C airplane make"? Let me tell you there is nothing like seeing the smile on the face of someone who completes their first solo flights. They have the satisfaction of knowing they accomplished something that will only lead to a better attitude and bigger ventures. I enjoy seeing a plane I have either scratch built or brought back from a severe crash take to the Wild Blue and complete a flawless flight. No hobby is cheap. Good luck to you.

Best Regards,
Flak

wow thats some thing flak. my girlfriend has given a full list of reasons as to why im not allowed one yet.

1 i have 2 bedrooms and a landing and hallway to decorate
2 in order to start building planes again i need to convert the attick into a workshop to build in
3 its coming up to christmass and we have a 2 and a half year old daughter
4 the list continues.

also my girlfriend recons if i got a plane i wouldnt do any of the above as she thinks i will be more intrested in the plane.

i think the best thing to do is do all of the above and extra to get her happy with me then after chrstmass run to the nearest model shop good side is it will be january sales haha.

they are nice vehicals flak bet its hard to find parts for them or do you have to make your own

It's cheaper than a new bass boat.

It's cheaper than a full scale airplane.

It's cheaper than a pilot's license.

It's cheaper than a woodworking shop.

It's cheaper than a sports car.

It's cheaper than a beach house.

It's cheaper than that trip she wants to Hawaii.

It's cheaper than a new motorcycle.

It's cheaper than a mistress.

It's cheaper than an audio/video room.

It's cheaper than adding a game room to the house.

It's cheaper than building a race car.

It's cheaper than raising horses.

It's cheaper than rebuilding from hurricane Ike (It may not be a hobby but it's what I'll be doing for a while!)

It's cheaper than going to strip clubs.

It's cheaper than cocaine.

It's cheaper than the remodeled kitchen she wants.

It's cheaper than a sail boat.

And it's much, MUCH cheaper than a divorce!!!

All I got to say is its fun and you can meet a lot of new people. One word of advice. If you get a plane or two and then decided things are not working out, sleep very CLOSE to your planes! One guy are field went threw a divorce and when he got home hello pieces of scrap wood. She stomped the planes into to pieces and some of them were not even his.

Yup...........

This seems like a long way roundabout to get some balance back in your life.I was at the field today looking around at all the people i like flying with.Good times but lots of crashes for the few who flew today, steady sou wester and gusty winds to 40kph.Nobody walked away without a smile and a "see you next sunday" feeling.

Default RE: EXPLANATION OF RC AIRCRAFT.

Compare it to some of the other hobbies that men or couples enjoy.
The cost of startup is about equal to golf, unless you buy your own cart.
The cost to play a round of golf is $20 and up to several hundred.
A gallon of fuel is $20 and last several weekends.
If you crash a plane you have a moderate expense.
If you wrap a club around a tree you have a moderate expense.
If you go play golf you always drink aftrwards.
We never drink at the flying field.

Let's not even get into guns, ammo and hunting licenses.
Fishing is cheaper if you stay on the bank - that won't last long.

You do have to balance your chores and your hobby.
I don't want to be negative about marriage but if she is unreasonable now it will get worse.
I usually spend one day a weekend with chores and one day playing.
If you have a major project in progress then forget the play until it is done.
Then you deserve several extra play days.
All kidding aside, it seems you have an excellant opportunity here to evaluate compatability of priorities before making a long term commitment. Not an easy thing to do objectively but very necessary. Planning on having children?

Good Luck,

You already have enough replies to your post for you to determine where to go. A hobby cannot take precidense over a wonderful marital reliationship, BUT, from what I have read about the relationship I question the wonderful part. Anyway I would think hard and long about the statements made by kW counter and others.

dont get me wrong our relationship is great its just she is scared if i crash the plane about the cost of repairing or replacing it. that is what s putting her off the hobby a little. We have 2 year old girl and it looks like she is geting intrested in planes because she will sit hours with me watching them on youtube.
I mean every hobby has its ups and its downs and they all have its expenses, but model aircraft is a more skilled and stand out from the rest.

You just need to understand jewel rates (often misspelt as dual rates[X(]).

It's the amount of jewellery you need to buy your wife to offset the new kit/ARF/Radio Set/motor you just bought. Once you get this sorted all will be fine!

You will crash your airplane. Multiple times most likely. Most crashes aren't total losses though, just a big expense in time.

I do this hobby only because my wife is ok with it. I'm a gun nut too, again only because my wife is ok with it. She likes shopping and jewelry, and spends the amount of money that I'm ok with. My wife and I have an arrangement that works pretty well because we both have reasonable amounts of freedom.

We just had a baby, and now the priorities are different. Fewer flying field days, new plane and new gun schedule has been dramatically slowed, and her shopping budget had been reduced. It's still a workable arrangement, but if the time comes when flying RC doesn't fit into the other more important things that I need to do, then I will stop. Anyone who wants to both be married and have a hobby needs the same attitude.

Jester,
Good solid attitude and replies.
I don't get hassled about my purchases and I don't comment on the QVC bills.
My wife and I are coming up on our 18th anniversary.

Default RE: EXPLANATION OF RC AIRCRAFT.

I'm going to stirr things up...

My VERY (far more than me!) attractive girlfriend, who lives in a far hotter and financially better country than I do.. wholey supports my RC flying!

I moved 1500 miles to be with her and after a year and a half, I joined a local club.

she doesnt understand it
she doesnt like the money
she doesnt like the mess
she doesnt like the time i spent in "my office" building
she doesnt like the time I spend at the club during weekends
she doesnt like the fact that the same day I buy a new plane i'm looking on the internet for the next, dispite only having physical space in the house and car for 2
she doesnt have any interest in seeing the planes fly or other planes

however she trully will plug in my TX rx's etc to charge the night before flying while I am out drunk with my mate...
prepare my lunch and leave it in the microwave while I go fly for the morning...

basically she admitted that even though she does not like it, I sacraficed my whole life to move to her country, learn her language and now its just a part of me looking for new friends and building a life.

I CANT justify the money I spend on the hobbie... but I enjoy doing it too much... for me its 60% building 40% flying and the club!
