how bright does a glow plug have to glow
hey, im making an onboard glow system, and was wondering how bright they are supposed to be to work properly. i have a D size battery for testing, and it only glows about a dull orange. will this be enough to work properly, or does it have to be brighter.
any input is greatly appreciated

dull orange should be enough to start the engine if everything else is OK. Inside the house, the element should glow pretty bright orange. Outside in bright daylight the same glow plug / battery combination won't look quite as bright but should work OK.

RE: how bright does a glow plug have to glow
ok hopefully it works. its for an experiment. i have read about people running gas in their glow engines and keeping the glow plug powered all the time. they loose a bit of power, but fuel economy is boosted significantly. i momentarily hooked it up to 2 AA batteries (so it got 2.4V) and it was a very bright color. didnt burn it out, but i wonder if it will affect the life. i dont need the platinum, cause there will be no methanol. i imagine that the plug getting this hot, would have burned the platinum off.
