Servo extension cords
Hi folks,
Do you buy extension cords when you need to add to the length of servo leads or do you make them yourselves? Either way, where do you buy the stuff cheap?

RE: Servo extension cords
I make the extra long ones or ones that are nill stock at the time I need them. I get the conectors [link=http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5494&Product_Name=Servo_Terminals_(JR)_Gold_Plated]Here[/link] and the wire from [link=http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6904&Product_Name=Flat_22AWG_servo_wire_1mtr_(R/B/Y)]Here[/link].

I use [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=001546586&I=LXUR70&P=K]heavy duty extension chords[/link] from tower. I use the biggest gage wire they list to reduce voltage drop across the wires - especially important with a digital servo system.
People talk about adding failure points when you use extensions rather than extending the servo wire. All the directions I've had so far say to use them, including some from top companies. I have yet to have a problem and yet to hear of a problem specifically related to failure in an extension.
They cost a couple of extra bucks, but when already making an order, and saving build time, they're worth it to me.

RE: Servo extension cords
If you used a good quality extension and heat shrink the connections, it is generally very reliable. I have seen planes though that were a few years old though that had weird servo glitches due to lightly corroded plugs. I assume that the signal wire was the problem more than the power wires.
I'm definitely not a proponent of adding any more possible failure points if it can be avoided but I figure my solder joint could just as easily end up being a problem as the extension connector. I see no problem using the commercial extensions unless there is a special need for something custom.

I have all the materials to make my own but, that was until I found this guy.

2 extensions or Y harnesses for $6, mix and match any length. That's $3 each and it's only $3 shipping for any amount ordered.
He uses the gold ends (Futaba or JR) and the good flexable silicone wire.
When adding to servo's, I always use a servo keeper on the connection. Shop around for them because you can find them a lot cheaper than $1 each ( which is nuts).

Sonic-Tronics has 40% off this weekend! That's about $.40 each.
If you don't want to go keepers, use shrink tubing.

I've purchased from Brad, too. His servo extensions are high quality. He also has good prices on servos. Besides this, he doesn't rip you off on shipping, and he's a nice guy, to boot.
The Sonic-tronics sale is a good one. I purchased a 6 cylinder on board glow for $101.00 !!!
