Default Can you RE - COVER a ARF easily?????

Hey Guys,

I have a fliton extra which is supposed to be a bad az flyer with a saito 100 on it. I'm almost done with the build, but I have to say, the color scheme is a little.... fruity.

Anyway, I was wondering how hard it is to strip and recover a plane? when I stripped the coating off the stab (when I was putting it on, and needed to cut the center out to glue) it came off fairly easily.

Since then, I used the iron to take out the wrinkles it had out of the factory. Will this make it harder to remove, or not really?

Thanks!
Tim

It depends on which covering is used.

MonoKote (and its clones) is a bear to get off, and the older it is, the tougher it is.

Ultracote (and its clones) will come off easily with a little help from a heat gun

Or if you have the no name stuff on a bargain basement ARF, it will peel off all on its own with just normal handling.

HMMMMMM.... well, how do find out, without opening a can of worms. Actually it peeled off really easily, but that was before I hit it with the iron. will that have changed things?

If you peel it off an there is still color on the wood you have Monokote, and if no color is on the wood it's Ultracoat. The best way to remove any covering is with a heat gun. Heat the covering at you peel it off. This will help the adhesives to release and make it a bit easier to remove it. A good welders glove helps here to keep your hand from getting burned from the heat gun. Long tweezers or hemostats help too.

If you have Monokote you'll more than likely have to give the structure a light sanding to remove the coloring that's on the wood after you get the covering off.
