You will have to modify it for the normal exhaust. Sounds like the owner wanted to be different. You could get an older 2 piece crankcase engine and put it together backwards just to do it or he had a very old engine. Some Fox .60s could rotate the whole cylinder around to a different location. I would go with something .46 in a TT or OS or Magnum brand.

A lot of the older engines had the lift side exhaust, With the narrow mount like O& R and a many othe earley engines. when model engines first came out most had the left exhaust.

The earlier K&B Torpedo engines (up to the series 71 IIRC ) had the exhaust on the "other" side...
You could use a newer K&B .40 (model #4011 or maybe a series 75 style, model #8011 ) if ya wanted to, and swap the front housing/backplates around so your exh. was on the opposite side (compared to most of today's engines )
As far as the OP question...K&B's were used, and a friend had an HP .40 in his...HB .40's O.S. of course, but they all have the exh. on the same side as modern engines.

The MVVS engines can be set up as either side exhaust or rear exhaust. The engines are delivered with right hand exhaust but before running you can disassemble and reassemble as rear exhaust. Once it's been run you have to leave it that way.
I don't know if they can be set up as either left, right or rear exhaust or if it's just right or rear exhaust. I'd bet they can do all three. It would be worth a phone call or e-mail to find out.
