do you own a car just to transport your planes?
Hey guys,
do you own a car just to transport your planes? I would love to own old VW Bus (the 1970s edition) to transport my airplanes and I was thinking if a lot of people have cars designated only for transporting airplanes...show us some pictures!!

Most likely my next car will be Subaru so I will be able to carry bigger airplanes than in my Corolla....

My 05 Monte Carlo has the fold-down rear seat and I can just get my Mustang an LT-40 in there. The wife agrees we need a 68 Impala with a matching trailer

When I bought my truck I specifically got 4-doors so that I could fold down the rear seat and haul small airplanes and gear back there. Bigger stuff rides in the bed. Going to get a trailer one of these days. I know a few people who own vans for their airplanes too.
One of these days I'll sneak my wife's Lexus out and haul a few planes to the field in it just to get her worked up.

Sold my Buick Lesabre and got a Chrysler Town & Country with Stow n Go Seating and power doors and rear gate. Greatest mini van going. Has charge plug for my charger and I leave one second row seat up to hold my battery box, etc.

But as soon as I find a job I'll use it for commuting to that, too. []
Damn "restructuring".

When I started flying I quickly figured out my '99 Mustang wasn't going to work.
I bought a 2002 Mazda B4000 P/U and installed a roll up tonneau cover and
sold the Mustang to my daughter - I hope she starts making payments soon [] .
I recently bought a Ford Focus as a commuter car and kept the P/U.
I guess I have a vehicle just for hauling planes, lumber, starting benches, garbage .....
Good Luck,

I don't own a car specifically for planes, but anytime I buy a new car, one of the stipulations is that it needs to be able to haul planes.
About two years ago, I downsized from my Blazer to a Forester.

Nope, I already had the 3/4 ton Chevy for hauling the boat, tractors, and other misc equipment. Now I need a 25 foot box trailer full of airplanes to put behind it. Unfortunately my current collection will fit in the cab, but I have dreams of needing the trailer in the future. Just don't tell my wife.

I always consider my planes when purchasing a car. I have had three Ford Hatchbacks. Here is my 2007 Ford Focus and my Flying Indycar and my Flying Lawnmower. Both are 46 size planes.

My first car was a '64 Ford Ranch Wagon and I have had vans/mini vans ever since. Always felt the need for the extra space to haul model airlanes, bicycles, etc.

I've given some thought to this, and haven't solved the problem yet. I currently drive a 4-Runner, which is fine for most of my airplanes up to around 60" +/- wingspan. However, as I get more into scale, and the one-piece wings approach 90", it's a problem to get it all in without some hanger damage. Been thinking about a new Toyota or Honda van, which, with the rear seats out, would work out just fine. But, where do I store the seats - another problem. Also been thinking about buying a used cargo van (Ford E250 or the like). With this economy, probably can pick up a good used one for not too much. Requirements where I live do not allow a trailer to be parked more than two days, so that's out. Good to hear some of your solutions. Lee

Last year I was kinda sorta looking around for a Van to transport my planes. Finally the right deal popped up...one of those Lumina APV's came on the market, bought it for $400! Bunch of miles on it, but it's a good running local beater/hoopti! As a bonus, the owners son had removed the seats, and he couldn't find them. I didn't want to fool with them anyway! Best model aircraft accessory I've bought in a long time......

I picked up a Dodge Grand Caravan for $50.00 from a lady that didnt want to sink anymore money into it. I did the head gaskets & power steering line repair myself & I'm telling you it is the best all around vehicle I have ever owned. Just like R/C man says. I can fit 2 1/3 scale with lots of room to spare. 29 mpg too! When it dies, I'll find another. Full size van might have more room, but can not beat the milage with this thing. It also moved me here to N.Carolina from Ohio this summer & after 3 years of hauling me & my planes & then moving, it is still going strong. Bill

This van was sitting in the show room in 1999, has everything in it that was offered then, even real leather seats. I bought it to haul my mother in law in, it was the only thing low enough that she could get in without being lifted. After she passed I took it over as my hauler. The photo only shows two planes in it but one is a 68 inch Boeing F4B-2 Bipe and the other is a 66 inch Tiger Moth. I was heading out for a few days at an IMAA show so after the planes went in {assembled} then all my camping gear was stowed. If I was going to by another hauler it would be a cargo van so I could finish the insides for planes and gear plus all the other stuff I haul when leaving for weekend trips.
