Where to buy methanol for custom fuel mix?
My larger Supertigre engines, 3000 etc. use low nitro and low oil fuel to run optimal.
I believe it would run on 2% nitro and 12% oil.
I was wondering what a source for methanol could be since I could buy a gallon of 5% and cut it proportionally. Can any methanol be used?

You would think Lowes or Home Depot would carry this stuff in their solvent aisle.
They wouldn't sell methanol under a different name would they?

Whiterook,
My most frequently used formula starts with Wildcat premium extra 18% oil and 10% nitro. I mix two parts of this with one part of methanol. This will give 12% oil and 6.67% nitro. I do the measuring with a coffee cup or by counting the cranks on my manual fuel pump. Kinda crude (but accurate), expecially for a Chemical Engineer LOL. With the 29% oil Fox fuel I would suggest one part fox fuel and 2 parts methanol. But that will be only 9.67% oil in the mix. I have castor oil on hand so if I made up a gallon of that mix I would add 2 ounces of castor which would bring the whole batch up to 11% oil. And the nitro would be diluted down to about 1.6% now.
A year of so ago I made up mixes with a variety of starting brands of commercial fuel to see if I noticed any difference in performance with different nitro contents between the 1.6% and some 10% fuel. I could not tell a difference.

BTW $2.50 a gallon is what I paid this summer at the go-cart shop

Chuck, Good mix info....now that you mention castor oil, can you use the drug store anti-constipation oil or something else?

I used to get my alcohol from the Super Shop speed shop in 15 gallon drums, nitro from my LHS, Hobby People and then just buy Klotz oil, I got mine from Tower but a lot of LHS carry it and probably most go kart shops. FAI fuel uses no nitro and my 2300 runs just fine on FAI fuel. Nitro in most country's is a very high dollar item so FAI fuel is used a lot.
