PLANE IN TREE
Does anyone have suggestions on how to get a plane down from a tree? It is in a wooded area of a public park up about 40 - 50 ft.
Someone suggested making a pvc pipe pole by connecting pipe sections to the desired length. There is about $300 worth of gear in 2
Sections In the tree. Battery still connected but prop is broken.

RE: PLANE IN TREE
PVC pipe is a good idea, did the same thing a couple years ago to get an
electric out of a pecan tree, 1" PVC is the best for rigidity, make a Tee on
the top end and pad it with a foam sleeve to keep further damage to the plane
to a minimum. Tee out about 6" each side of fitting for best results, wear
a hard hat just in case you don't get out of the way from a falling plane
quick enough.............

RE: PLANE IN TREE
If the PVC pipe doesn't work, talk to the parks department. Sometimes they will help. I have seen the local fire department help with a ladder truck. You could also hire a tree trimmer to use a bucket truck , about $100/hr..
Or wait until the wind blows it out

RE: PLANE IN TREE
One of our club members knew someone at our local electric power company and was aware that they used telescoping poles to trip high tension switches high up in the air in their normal work. He also knew that these poles had to be periodically tested to make certain that their insulating qualities were still working. When a pole failed this test it was discarded. We now have one of those discarded poles at our club flying field. Try a bow and arrow or a sling shot to shoot a line over the plane or branch. Can you get permission to cut the tree down?

Cut down the tree
I had this happen in my neighborhood once. I had every broom handle, piece of pipe and whatever else I could find duct taped together and I stood on top of a ladder and just managed to reach the airplane and knock it down.

RE: PLANE IN TREE
I dont thing the Parks Department would be too happy with us cutting down a tree. I think we are going to stick to the pvc pipe solution in which each piece can be inserted one into the other until you get a long enough pole. It's cheap, safe and environmentally friendly.
Thanks all

RE: PLANE IN TREE
We have a long aluminum pole at our field that has a small hook on one end. When have been able to use it to pass a loop of rope over a higher branch and onto a landing gear. then pull the limb holding the plane away and lower the plane to the ground.
unfortunately, I have been getting too much practice at getting planes out of trees!

RE: PLANE IN TREE
Thanks all for your suggestions. If anyone has used the pvc pipe at least 50 ft, what diameter did you use to prevent wobble? This info is valuable to all of us since sooner or later we may end up in a tree!

RE: PLANE IN TREE
If you can throw a rope around a tall branch and tie the end of the PVC pipe to it, it will help with the stability, since pulling 50 ft vertically is much better than pushing it.
If the diameter of pipe is made big enough to make it stable, then weight compromises fine manipulation.
Best luck!

Tie a long rope to the end of the PVC pipe (preferably 2 of them), and have someone (or two) control the tip the the pole with the rope while you lift the pole.... will make your life MUCH easier....

RE: PLANE IN TREE
After 5 months in a tree, 75 feet up, I finally got it buy useing 100 feet of nylon line and a bunch of lead sinkers, throwing it about 100 times,It finally wraped itself around the fuse and a few tugs later my plane landed .and after cleaning the motor up on my buffing wheel, put it in my motor mount and 4-5 flips and was running.Satio 72 4S.

RE: PLANE IN TREE
I've had great success by throwing a rope (with a rock or other weight tied to one end) over the offending limb and shake it out (holding both ends of the rope).

RE: PLANE IN TREE
I made this after my HZSC had a tree jump out in front of it. Make sure you get NO-STRECH string or it will shoot back at you at a ridiculously fast speed.

RE: PLANE IN TREE
It all depends on tree and where plane landed. Is tree climbable,is plane in top midway or lower branches?
Most post have some good info. In my expr. and I've had some (gatreetop) for less damage to plane
Use telesp. pool pole, climb tree,if its a big one use tree climbing spike. The closer you get to plane
the easyer it is to get out.Oh yea use eye bolts on pole run cotton rope thru w/slip loop at top to secure and
move plane around. If you don't think you can do climb,ck w/local tree folks. Them good ole boys will
often do it for you at a resonable price. Couple six packs and a dollor or two.LOL. If this don't help try
trained monkeys. LOL GOOD luck.

RE: PLANE IN TREE
We have a a guy (local tree lopper) that we call and only charges $40bucks to get models out of trees, we pay cash(drinking money) so he's quite quick arriving. When you are looking at a model with a couple of hundred bucks worth of gear in it, the few bucks to get it back is well spent.

RE: PLANE IN TREE
I have an EPP glider that has over 1,000 flights on it. I bet I got that thing hung 20-30 times in trees over the years. I used a shotgun to "shoot" the limbs that were holding the glider. I could cut the limbs in two with 2-3 good shots and it would fall out. However, when I restored it a few years back, it had TONS of lead shot all over/in the wings One piece had even weakend the spar. Ohhhhh, good times!!!!

RE: PLANE IN TREE
Crossbow with a heavy bolt a fishing reel and some fine monofilament.
Shoot over the limb and use the monofilament to pull a heavier line over the branch. Now pull hard and see if you can work it loose.
As a last resort use heavier monofilament and shoot at the plane.

RE: PLANE IN TREE
I just had a electric glider get stuck in a tree a few days back. It was barely dangling off of two branches. After throwing a few hundred snowballs, without any luck (I am no Nolan Ryan), I decided to recruit my father to the cause. His suggestion, a .22 Winchester. Three rounds later, the plane was on the ground safe and sound with a few dings on the LE.
Keep in mind, I was on private property (Folks land) and we were conscious of what we where shooting at. All three rounds went into the tree.
Old fashion ballistics works great... In the right setting that is.
