Default N- numbers

Does anyone know what font is used for the "N" numbers? I have a vinyl cutting machine and would like to cut my own "N" numbers for my 1/3 scale cub, but I'm not having much luck finding the right font.

Here is the regulation, http://www.risingup.com/fars/info/part45-29-FAR.shtml . I am unaware of any specified font. J-3s fall into the category that allows 3" lettering. Some Cubs did have larger letters(much larger) on the top of one wing and the bottom of the other. I'm not sure if that may have been an old FAR, but it is not in effect now. Other latter year production aircraft must have 12" lettering. There are exceptions for experimental aircraft, helicopters, and slower aircraft in some categories. If the plane goes to another country, 12" may be required. The Hangar 9 Cub N-numbers are representative as well as the full scale J-3 pictured below(that is me in the yellow hat).

Copied from

http://www.customcutgrafix.com/

“Regarding the two "military" style fonts at the top of the list, "Amarillo USAF" is an exact reproduction of the typeface currently in use by the U.S. Army and Air Force, and on many civilian aircraft as N-numbers. It has 45º corners and a 3 X 2 height to width ratio. The Amarillo font is quite similar to the N-numbers used on the Piper J-3 "Cub" but in reality the shape of the numbers is different in all of the numerals except the "0" and the "1". If you desire numbers for a J-3, be sure to ask for "J-3 CUB" numbers. I have created a set that matches perfectly. Other models of the "Cub" use slightly different shapes in a few of the numbers, but I have them on all file and can reproduce them accurately. Just specify the model & scale of the "Cub" you wish to replicate and we'll go from there.â€

Font for civilian aircraft is irrelevant. You can, and many do, put just about any style letters/numbers but the registration must follow the FAR for size here in the US and whatever governing regulations might be in foreign countries.

For the most part, size comes out to a basic formula.........width of each is 2/3 the height while the space between each is 1/6 the height. In the US, that comes out to a tail number that is 12" tall, 8" wide and the space between each is 2". These are minimums. You can make them bigger if you so choose. There are some exceptions, but mostly with respect to experimental aircraft and helis amoung a few.

I've been painting aircraft for 32 years now and have seen just about every style/font you could imagine. Round, square, slanted, shadows and not shadowed......you name it.

You know, I almost forgot I had this. This is actual FAA font, although it is only the square corner font. There are also rounded corners but you can just take the square ones and make them round to fit.

That is what I found too. Each one is like an individual as to height and width.

You can install the Bombardier or any other font in your computer, so you can manipulate the text as you like it using Microsoft Word.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...in=EC001022717

I have downloaded it from http://www.dafont.com and done it to verify, and it works great.

Regards!

This is the font I sell to customers with Piper Cubs.

May or may not be something from an actual font?
