50CC Gas for 1/3 Spacewalker
 

Is a 50CC Gas too much fora Sig 1/3 Spacewalker? I just picked up a Turnegy 50cc gas engine for a great price and I'm looking for a plane to put it in. The auw is 1648 gms. Any one put a 50cc gas in one? Any advise is welcome, thanks

huck,

I haven't, but I sure would. I suspect you will have the ground clearance for the prop and may still need some extra weight in the nose despite the size. I think that kit was designed for the G38, which is probably heavier than the engine you are considering. It will be over-powered: just about right.

Howdy Huck,

I think that would be a good matchup. I had one that I put a OS 300 Twin on (49cc), and for a long
time I converted it to gas using a CH Ignition. Flew it for 17 years.
It was a little more power than needed, but the little extra got me out of trouble more than once.
Weight was 19 1/2lb dry.
Great flying plane, you would have a lot of fun with it. I always likened it to a low wing Cub.

All the S/Walkers around here use mostly Q42....ample power. A few of my buddies in the U.S. use G62's. I would think a 50cc would be perfect for the job....fly great on half power.

Thanks for the input. I think this is a good choice also. Sig says they will produce the kit in a couple of weeks, just in time for Santa.

I have a 1/3 Spacewalker that I <span _fcktemp="1"></span>haven't started yet, and I <span _fcktemp="1"></span>don't have an engine for it.  I see that a lot of builders use a G-38 or G-45 (and G-62) Zenoah for the kit, and that the Quadras and 50/55 cc engines have been used also.  I would like some opinions of what gas engine I could put on the plane, and expect reliable operation for years to come without underpowering or way overpowering the plane?

Pretty much any engine you like in the 40 to 50 range. Right now the DLE 55 is one of the better engines to come out of China. A lot of choices in the 50cc class. If you want to spend the money then DA still makes one of the best.

I have read good reports about the DA-50-R. They seem to be very reliable. I think that by the time you take a Zenoah G-45 and add electronic ignition to it and the Brisson inverted Pitts muffler the cost would be about the same as the DA equipped the same way. Idon't have any knowledge about which engine would run better at mid-throttle where the Spacewalker would probably be most of the time.

I like mags so I never bother converting a Zinoah, the DA is a great engine but it's hard for a sport pilot to spend that much on one for a plane like the Walker. Not too many years ago conversions were a popular engine for that plane. I still have a Brison and got my muffler from JTEC but yes, it was a very high dollar engine but try to find one now. The DLE 55 runs every bit as well as the DA 50 and cost a bunch less. If someone was giving me an engine and I had the choice I would take the DA but if I was buying a new 50cc engine it would be the DLE. Ask me how I feel about that in five years and I may feel a bit different?? Most the DLEs I see are the 30cc and nothing much older then two years old. Time will tell, I wouldn't bet against the DA though, I see a lot of them well over 5 years old and still going strong. Pilots choice, there are several good engines on the market these days that don't break the bank.

If money is no object, you could go with the new Saito 57 Gasser, what a great
combination that would be.

I have a 20 year old Walker Sachs 4.2, that I'm putting in mine. I doubt that it'll ever go over half throttle.

If I were to buy a motor for the big SW, I'd buy a Zenoah G-45 or G-62, keeping the mag. You just can't beat Zenoah's track record for quality and reliability.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to go ahead and order a Zenoah.That will simplify things because Ihave a G-26 for a 1/4Spacewalker kit that showed up after Ihad given up on it from Sig. I just don't know whether to get the 45 or 62.I wonder if usingthe 62 would require a smaller diameter propforground clearance? The benchmark prop for a 45 is 20 x 10 and the benchmark prop for the 62 is 22 x 10.

I agree that the new Saito 57T would be nice. I just don't like the thought of being a test rabbit for the first production run of them.

I looked at the Horizon Hobby website, and they list the prop range for the G-62 as 20x8&ndash;22x10. The 20x10 would probably be fine.

I'm a G-62 user myself but if I was buying new it wouldn't be my first choice these days. The weight is the big draw back but it is a nice old engine. I use a spring starter on mine and it starts first flip every time after it is primed. We just have so many nice choice these days.

Gray Beard and Tom Crump, I sure do appreciate you taking the time and sharing your knowledge with me and others. It's not as hard getting back into model planes as Ithought it was going to be, but it sure is more expensive than it used to be.
