Thrust line
 

Hi guys,

I am building a 60-sizeThunder Tiger J3Cub and decided to put a Saito 100 twin cyl engine in it. When the engine arrived I noticed that the carb was right on top and if I mounted the Saito on the original thrust line, the fueltank will be way too low. I can't move the tank as this is an ARF.

Can I mount the engine lower just to get it somewhere in line with the centreline of the tank or is this going to cause other problems ?

You could use a pump.

Thanks, but I was trying to avoid that but it seems to be about the only solution if I don't want to stuff anything else up !!

What's on the "bottom" of the engine? Mount it upside down. Then the carb would be more in line with the tank. You might have a problem routing the exhaust, but maybe not.

I tried that too; mounting the engine upside downwould have the exhaust routing problems like you mentioned, plus I will have to adjust both needle valves from the bottom of the cowl. You can't just change the carb over. Like you mentioned, if I turned the engine over and mounted it upside down, I will have the near perfect set-up except for the carb and needle problems.

Short of using a pump and not getting the thrust line wrong, I think there isn't much elseI can do...

The manual makes no reference to tank installation; hence, it may be irrelevant for this engine.

I am not familiar with the engine (I wish I had one):); but the exploded view shows an air pump.
It seems possible that such pump is able to increase the pressure in the fuel tank as to properly feed the carburetors, regardless the tank location.

It seems irrealistic that any plane can accomodate the thrust line and the tank level with such engine layout; hence, Saito must have a solution for it.

On the other hand, fuel pumps are not recommended for air bleed carburators, which this engine seems to have.

I would contact the distribuitor, or even better, the factory for a clarification of this matter before proceeding with the installation.
