Klass Kote Primer over Polycrylic?

Hi guys,
I am rebuilding a 1/3 Waco after a crash last spring and I want to try Klass Kote primer and paint this time around. The plane will be covered with fabric and I will be filling the weave with Minwax Polycrylic. Does anyone know if the Klass Kote primer will adhere well to the Polycrylic? I would hate to spend all the $$$ for this paint to have it come up with the masking tape.
Thanks!!
Anthony

It sticks very well. I use the Deft Sanding Lacquer when I glass a plane and don't bother with the primer. It sticks to everything I have ever used to cover a plane with. The price is a sticker shock though. When I painted the Swoose I used the yellow as my base color and that cost me about $40.00. I just happened to have some blue, orange and red on hand or I wouldn't have done it. The KK paint is bullet proof!!! Love the paint, hate the price!!

Thanks GB,
I had just sent an e-mail to KK asking about the compatability. I know the paint is expensive but good. I want to give my Waco a good finish. I had it painted with latex last time around and the finish just wasn't what I was looking for.
Later!!

I'm very happy with the planes I have painted with KK. It's very easy to work with and it isn't bad to clean up after your finished. I bought a small 4 ounce HVLP gun and it turned out to be easier to use then my bigger guns. Worked well with the KK but you can even use a brush with the stuff and it doesn't leave marks. Good stuff except for that one little thing. If it wasn't for the price it would be the only paint I would ever use. I like the Latex though for painting my gassers and if you want it to have more gloss there is an additive.

Hello,

After letting it sit for a couple of days and lightly sanding , I have used automotive acrylic lacquer, sprayed, thinned 200% with hot thinner without a problem. If anything will lift something, lacquer will. I have also used two part epoxy, automotive primer, without a problem.

There is one thing that KK will not adhere to, Butyrate dope. I made the mistake of painting a coat of it over a Butyrate finished stab and the paint peeled of like a glove the next day.

Thanks for the tip,
I do not use Butyrate dope so this will not be an issue. I will be attaching the fabric with Nitrate dope and then coating with Polycrylic. Laquer primer adheres to this very well so I do not see an issue with the KK primer based on comments here.
Thanks!!

Tony,

I don't know how much painting experence you have but if your spraying the primer, build it slowly. I usually dust the first coat on and let it flash for 20 minutes then a little heaver on the second and third coats with about 20 minutes between each coat. So far I have painted 6 planes with poly under both lacquer and expoxy. Where I see a problem with lifting is when someone tries to build a heavy fill coat on the first coat. And don't forget the flash time very important.. The attached plane was done with poly-lacquer-rustolem..

If you want to cut paint cost a bit...... My last paint job I used the acrylic paint (color) from our local Hobby Lobby craft store. It goes on nice and I cleared it with Automotive urethane. No bond issues to date. Everything was sprayed over rattle can auto primer.

On this plane I am not worried about the cost. The paint job is just a fraction of the cost. I am just looking for a nice looking durable finsih. No time to skimp when I get to the finish.

Is Klass Kote flexible for fabric?

I believe so, I have seen several people using it on planes covered with Solartex. I know of 2 1/4 Cubs painted with KK and no issues.

Is Klass Kote flexible for fabric?
Pretty much but when I use solartex it has been during the summer when I do most of my building and I cure the covering before I do any type of trim work or painting. I cover the plane and shrink then set it in the hot sun then take it back in the shop and shrink it tight again. I do this until it no longer sags or wrinkles. From then on the heat and hot sun no longer has any effect on the covering.
I don't use dope these days for much of anything so I didn't know the KK wouldn't adhere to butyrate. KK will flex within reason, it isn't brittle.

I would worry about spraying primer over open bay areas. Since it has a high solids content, I'd be afraid that it would crack from vibration.

I have not encountered any problems when spraying the topcoat (color coat) directly to Solartex.

I do prime Solartex, over sheeting, when I want to fill the weave, creating a "metal" look.

If there is a concern about the paint cracking on fabric, you can add a plasticizer to the paint. It is a common thing for the popular "rubber" bumpers on today's cars. It's been MANY years but (I think ) castor was added to dope as a plasticizer to help prevent cracks or maybe even help control shrinkage.

Correct, there is no need to prime Tex covering before painting. Paint sticks really well to Tex. I do have a big problem with paint bleed when painting over Tex though and trying to get a crisp line when doing trim but I even have that problem on a glassed plane. My painting skills really are bad but I keep trying.

Thanks for the answers. I have seen too many real airplanes use auto paint with bumper flex added and in 5 years it cracks. Dope, Stits, other brands, have plasticizers that last much longer than the home mix.

i have a question for you all. i am going to paint my cowl/canopy/hatch area with KK. how long should i wait if i want to sand the primer down. it was applied at about 5 pm central time.

speedracerntrixie 11-24-2014 08:56 PM

It sands best if you let it dry for 48 hours.

orthobird 11-25-2014 03:02 AM

QUESTION FOR YOU ALL....

this is after last coat of the paint. I have also removed the masking tape and no bleed under!! that is some good tape! the exposed primer will be painted yellow.

here is the question:

how long do i have to wait before i can apply the masking tape over the red area and paint another area a different color?

I let the paint sit a couple of days before masking for the next color just to be safe. I had no issues with the paint pulling up.
Your paint is looking good. I am attaching a picture of the top wing center section on my Waco. I sprayed a clear coat after pin striping..
