2.4 radio
 

hello. I want to upgrade to 2.4. I know when 2.4 first came out they were different receiver's for park flyers and glow planes. has this changed? what's the best radio with cheap receiver's? thanks for the help.

Choosing a radio is a matter of preference. It is like Chevy verse's Ford. You need to do some homework on what your needs are and then check the net for what the radios that are out there will do and won't do. I am a Futaba flyer and have been for over 30 years. Futaba missed the boat on the bind and fly stuff so I finally got a Spectrum 6X so I could get some of the Bind and Fly stuff. Both radios do the same thing. It is just a matter of how you make them do it. I think that now that Futaba has released a new 2.4 series, both brands are competitive on receiver pricing and styles. You still cannot use Futaba for Bind and Fly, however they have come out with something called any link and a line of planes for it. Once again, it comes down to what you want and need...Good Luck, Dave

Yes. There are still some that have limited range.

I have been having very good luck with Tactic from Tower/Hobbico (part of the conglomerate that owns Futaba now). I have the TTX850 and am very pleased with what it offers for $180.00

The TR625 is a full-range dual antenna six channel receiver for $25. For $20 you can get the TR624 but I eye that single 1" antenna with suspician.

The Tactic will also bind any of the Great Planes SLT models - which is a nice thing if you like any of those.

I also have a Spektrum DX6i for the Flyzone type bind and flies. I have 10 models on this Tx and it has been a warhorse. Also highly recommended.

Tactic and then Spektrum based on rec $.

When I have more $ in the air (large gassers) I use Futaba.

I see guys putting "orange" in some planes I would never consider - so some must trust them.

There - now I can duck and cover, too.

Best, all around good, is very subjective. What works for me may have been a total disaster for some one else.

I have had really good times with my 9x. Yes there are some spelling errors in the when reading the digital display. But I have not had any issues with it loosing signal, brown outs or other trouble with signal loss. Receivers run about $11.00 for the 6 or 8 channel.

Yet when I have my higher dollar planes in the air I put my Airtronics radio in them. I have (2) old FM RD6000's and (2) RDS8000's. As rock solid as you can get.

As far as most functions for the money and excellent reliability and inexpensive excellent receivers it will be hard to beat the Tactic 850. A truly BEST BUY.

I have worked with Aloft and can say they are well worth dealing with. The Flysky system has been catching on here at my fields and I have been using there receiver. There are a number of systems to look at that operate well and won't cost you an arm and leg. Check out the URLs Buzz has provided. And yes, there are a number of receivers out there that are short range. I just picked up an brand new Spektrum DX6 that is a park flyer radio. I got it in an estate sale. The fellow had it for a sail boat but died before he ever used it.It's short range.
