Inverted engine problems?
Im sure this has been asked hundreds of times, are there any negatives to inverted engine mounting?

RE: Inverted engine problems?
Mine seems to flood easier, but I deal with that by running the engine until it has cleared out before removing the glow igniter. My single cylinder gassers are very happy inverted.

RE: Inverted engine problems?
I don't notice a difference. THey look nicer.

RE: Inverted engine problems?
Easier to flood and I have found that the muffler next to the cylinder reduces cooling.
Other than that, no problems (gas engine) |
RE: Inverted engine problems?
All of the info I have received seems to indicate that 4 stroke engines run well inverted. Before there were glow plugs we used to run engines on ignition inverted with no problems. Perhaps it was because the ingnition plugs were hotter whenever they fired. Flooding will always be a problem if the engine is inverted. We hand started everything and only seemed to get bit when advancing the spark. Most of the pilots I know turn their aircraft upside down to start. As I observe it seems to be a very dangerous proposition to turn the model back to upright with a howling or even idling engine. Should be at least a two person operation.

Muffler's pointed the same way no matter how you have you're engine :D
Unless it's a Pitts-style in which case youshould specify that ;) |
RE: Inverted engine problems?
Inverted engines CAN be prone to flooding if the carb centerline is below the centerline of the fuel tank. But it's not always the case. Most properly designed planes work really well with inverted engines. When the tank is higher than the carb you tend to get syphoning problems, This can be cured in a number of ways. Some people pinch or clamp the fuel tubing to the carb until they are ready to start the engine. Some people purchase fuel regulators like the cline or the ironbay ones. Just do a little research into the plane and engine you are planning on buying.

RE: Inverted engine problems?
I have a Saito .91 4 stroke. mounted inverted in a cowled Unionville Turbo Beaver.
It runs beatiful. I can't see or get at the carb! and I just plug the exhaust to prime it. Biggest complaint is trying to put the dang glow heater on the glowplug. it is underneath and inside the cowling between the valve covers. Smoky. |

RE: Inverted engine problems?
i never experienced any problems with my glow engine!
u might just be carefull to avoid a fuel block! turn 2 or 3 times without ignition! it should work fine! have fun! |
RE: Inverted engine problems?
I was just about to say that sounds like a prime candidate for a remote system.
