Can't go wrong with an OS .46FX $110

Horsepower: 1.62 BHP at 16,000 rpm Weight: 13.2 oz, 16.45 oz w/muflr

I think the best 2C for a SE is the Irvine 53! It's just a few bucks more than a 46FX, but it's in a big jump up in power and reliability! Irvine carbs are legendary -- I never actually had to touch the low end needle on mine as it was perfect from the factory... I also don't remeber it ever not starting on the first or second flip. I don't ever remeber using the "persuader"...

Yup Irvine-53 :D

A solid backup is the TT Pro-46 for around $80 bucks!

Look into the Magnum 52 XLS. Neat little engine. $100.

MVVS .49 don't have the specs but you can go to www.mvvs.com it is my all time favourite it is around 130.00 with tuned muffler. It runs great on no or very low Nitro

just my .2 cents CDN.

Irvine 53 or MVVS 49 both proven performers. Both about the same money. How about a Nova Rossi? I hear they are good engines. They are reputed to make a lot of power. Anyone here got some dope on them?

I don't have any factory specs for you, but I can tell you that the O.S is overated by the manufacturer. I have been flying a GMS .47 for 3 years with no problems. In a side by side comparison with an O.S. 46 FX, both engines turning an APC 11X5, the O.S. came in at 12,800 RPM and my GMS came in at 13,700 RPM. The O.S. was running on 10% Cool Power and the GMS on 5% Cool Power. My GMS never fails to start and I think I have had to adjust the low end once. On January 1, 2004 we had our frozen finger fun fly and I flew my SE/GMS combo with the same Carb settings as I used over the summer. If you want an engine that will hover the SE and at the flip of your left hand climb out with authority, the GMS is the real deal!!!

Another note, if you are considering getting your GMS .47 from Tower, as near as I can tell, they are selling the GMS with a different muffler than you will get at www.mecoa.com. The muffler from MECOA is a tuned muffler. I have no clue what the muffler is that Tower is selling with their GMS engine, but the muffler is key in the performance of the engine. In fact, we put the original GMS muffler on the O.S. .46 FX and noted about a 1000 RPM improvement in performance. Thought you would find that tidbit of value.

Comment relative to the two types of mufflers available on the GMS 47 is right on. Both are available, the 47 with the STD muffler sold by Tower is $10.00 cheaper. The 47 with the tuned muffler from MECOA is $79.

The MVVS engines don't just have a lot of power , they have it in the right place.
I don't just look at max RPM. The MVVS engine have a lot of pulling power at lower
rpm's and instant throttle response making them great for verticals.
I read a couple of reviews by Clarence Lee - He calls them stump pullers.

RE: GMS .47 is there a better motor ?

I just did my own comparison test between a GMS .47, OS .46AX and Magnum .52XLS. All 3 engines were new and I broke them in on my test stand using 10% Omega fuel. I ran them with the stock mufflers and the non-tuned GMS and again with Tower tuned mufflers. In every case, the GMS was at the bottom of the heap.

Maybe I got a bad one, but it appears it has made its reputation using a semi-tuned muffler-the same as the Tower, which brought it up to match the AX. Then the AX gained 700 rpm with a Tower muffler.

Granted I was using a 12.25-3.75 fun fly prop, but that's what I fly a lot. I would not expect the comparison to be much different with any size prop.

The Magnum was bigger so it ran faster. I would venture to say-and I haven't tested the others-that the OS .50, Magnum .52 and Irvine .53 aren't super engines, they run faster because they have more displacement. It's like comparing a ball bearing .40 to a .46, about the same difference. You know the .46 is going to be faster so why not expect the .50-.53's to be faster. That seems like a no-brainer to me.

The same thing can be said for the .61, which, in my opinion, is becoming obslescent. There are .75s and .91s in the same case just like the ,46 in the .40 case. Why buy an OS .61, Tower .61, Super Tigre .61, Magnum .61 etc., when you can get an OS .91, Tower .75, Super Tigre .75, Magnum .91 etc. in the case case and same weight.

RE: GMS .47 is there a better motor ?

Keep in mind that the GMS has head shims to adjust the compression. It comes from the factory set up for easy starting. Once broken in, the number of head shims can be reduced to improve compression and performance. I have not tried it, since the performance from mine is already so good. However, it would be interesting to see what the compression would increase to if the shims were taken out. Has anyone tried this???

RE: GMS .47 is there a better motor ?

the GMS and tower engines look the same to me! I wonder who makes towers engines?!? I have a 46 fx and a tower 46. the tower is the most worthless thing when it comes to throttle transition but has plenty of power. The os also has plenty of power but I've never tached them using the same prop. The os (as with all my OS engines) IS the most reliable motor I have ever come across. I have NEVER had a dead stick landing with any os engine except when the tank went dry!
