problem with blind nuts
 

[size=3][/siz Any one know how to position BLIND NUTS on the back of a hard plywood firewall , I have an old Lanier ARF , there is no hatch or close access point. Lanier says to slide one over a wire with a 1/2" right anglebend in it. then slide through the hole, I enlarged the hole as per instructions, but it won't hold. I need to position 4 to hold the engine mount.

Sometimes you gotta play around to get it where you want.. and it can be a mess.


I have on occasion, threded a screw into the blind nut from the back... slipped a piece of fuel tube on the screw (again from the back) then stuck nyrod in the fuel tube. You now can PUSH the screw into the back of the plywaood's pre-drilled hole. You have screw threads to get a large washer and nut on and can use that to pull the blind nut into the plywood.

Then... you gotta get the screw out without knocking the blind nut out of the plywood.:eek: and that can also be a pain.

Drill the hole for the blind nut about .005" smaller than the shaft of the blind nut. Go to Home depot, Loews or any hardware store and by a piece of threaded rod, All thread. Install the blind nut onto the all thread and pull it through the hole. The actually blind nut will need to be pulled into the firewall by installing a washer and nut on the alltrhead and tightening the nut onto the firewall.

Lee, I really like that. I had to install blind nuts in a Global PT-17. I have a long nose set of spring-loaded pliers that allow me to grab the blind nut from behind, push it part way into the hole and then carefully thread a screw into it to capture it. You could probably do the same with a set of long-nose pliers with a rubber band around the handle to hold the jaws closed on the nut. Good luck.

I do it like Lee does except that I coat the area with C/A just before seating it. That way, I make sure that it holds good.
