DECALS Where or how?
 

This seems like a silly question but I spent 3 months building a kit and now it is taking a month to find a decal. Where in the world do you guys and gals get the decals? Do they make a decal sheet to use in your printer? If so where do you get them? I can make the design on my computer but I can't find any decal paper for it in 8.5 x 11 if they make such a thing. The local print shop wants an arm and leg for 4 decals. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Jeff

Jeff, you could use monokote or ultrakote to make your own trimmings. Which kit are you building ? Search into the many threads on the subject here. There's a book by Faye Stilley that I will recommend strongly

This is just what I have been looking for. I am going to buy some of the decals sheets from Waterslide and make my own decals. I will then test them to see if they are fuel proof with the krylon clear cote spray they recommend.:D

Hi,

I just recently tested some paper myself and found that krylon is not totally fuel proof. It will degrade. I "fixed" the inkjet ink with krylon and then later sprayed with clear polyurethane which has better fuel proof properties. I am still testing so if the polyurethane breaks down - I will let you know.

Thanks for letting my know. I have just ordered my decals sheet from waterslide. I went over to the local hobby shop and bought a sheet of WWII German decals. They are a little small for what I need, but I plan to scan them into my computer and us my graphics software to enlarge them. I will then print them out on the decal sheets and try them on my 4 star 60.:D

Let me know if the Polyurethane works out.

Hi Jim,

I just thought about a couple of other things. When I experimented with "fixing" the ink jet ink, I had some that were just misted with Krylon and some that were sprayed a bit heavier. The ones that were misted cracked as I carefully pulled the decal from the backer and some of the ink was exposed to the water resulting in a ruined decal. The ones that were a bit heavier worked out well, however, too heavy equals a fogged appearance. There is no way to explain how heavy is right so all I can say is to be careful and experiment a bit. I am still new to this "make your own decal" thing myself so I will post new results when and if I learn more.

I just made some decals for my 1/5 P-51 using Bel Decal paper from [link]http://kustomrides.com[/link]. Coated them with Rustoleum Clear Laquer and tested with 40:1 gas\oil mix and have seen NO problems. Kustom Rides has very good prices on the clear and white decal paper. $9.75 for 10 sheets. Ordered online on a Friday night and had them in the mail Tues. afternoon. Designed the decals using Coreldraw 9.

Pretty much all of those paints (Krylon, Rustoleum) will stand up to gasoline/oil mixes, it's the glow fuel that gets them. (Well, the nitro in the glow fuel.)

Just saying that your test doesn't really apply to slowfly's use. (So slowflt, test for yourself. ;))

[link=http://www.micromark.com/]MicroMark[/link] sells inkjet & laser decal paper also. I think for 5 sheets of white, its around $8. The white paper is for decals which have white in them. A printer doesn't print white ;) I am definately going to check out those other links as well :D

actually Clear is all you need you can always add some white mono or ultracote underneath the decal

Does anyone here know if Brother P-Touch labels can be made fuel-proof?
It might be an easy way to make decals thatcontain a lot of text, without printing a full sheet.

If you're interested, I make water transfer decals. I can make any decal you need in sizes up to 7"

He made me some very nice vinyl decals for my Bell 222, at a very fair price.

I also just made some myself for my J3 Cub, with the decal paper from micromark. Turned out very nice ;) You just need to be sure and seal them, and let them dry completly.
