Epoxy question

Will thinning epoxy w/ alcohol slow the cure rate? I'm trying to put a horiz. stab on & only have 5 min. epoxy, which doesn't give me enough time to make sure it's on straight (this time). thanx

RE: Epoxy question

No, thinning it won't slow the cure rate. Wait and buy some 30 minute.

Yeah Geez, I've been using 5-minute on everything for years. Bought my first 30-minute ever this year, and hate it.

No. You need to get some 30 minute epoxy. The 30 minute epoxy is less brittle and typically stronger than the 5 minute.

Campy hit it on the head. The longer the cure time the stronger the joint. I don't use 5 min for anything on a model. Too brittle and weak. I use the 30 min for general stuff and 2 hour for anything like wing brace joints and such.

RE: Epoxy question

Do not trust 5 minute for what you are doing, very poor and much weaker than the slower cures. Use at least 30 minute epoxy.

RE: Epoxy question

While it may be weaker it is still strronger that any of the wood in the plane. The two things that 30 minute epoxy gives you are working time and since it takes longer to harden it should work into the wood a little better for a stronger bond. To me, its just makes sense to use 30 minue epoxy on wing joints and tails.
